Positives : Outstanding support play, great workrate, good speed.

Negatives : Never runs 60 metres breaking 6 terrible tackles fending off 3 guys & bumping off a terrible fullback in a way that he will never do ever nor has any AB loose forward ever because test match rugby doesn't have that level of shithouse D that we see in Super rugby but every year we try to select guys who do that but can't actually do what we need from a test player.

But which of the number 7's don't have outstanding support play, great work rate or good speed? Savea is probably better than Todd at all 3 of those. Apparently Todd looks like a test number 7 but so do they all.

    What does that actually mean?

What I mean by that is doing everything right, and making a (positive) difference when he does. Having an impact, often and not making mistakes.

It's what I in my role as armchair selector look for when selecting my All Blacks team.

Preventing a drunken free for all is not fun policing. Should have had more of that at Eden Park in the late 80s and ODIs would still be sold out. But i suppose it's finding the balance between stopping idiocy and unnecessary gestapoing.

Except TJP isn't their reserve halfback anymore judging by RWC selection. I don't think TJP is best suited to being an AB reserve due to his temperament. He has a tendency to try too hard when he comes on the field, often making basic mistakes. That's not to say he won't improve but he needs to relax more.

I agree that TJP is the best running halfback - that's his strength. The good thing is that all three offer something a little different. Four if you include Weber in the mix.

I don't disagree that he's a clear bench replacement for Aaron Smith, but World Cups are a bit of an anomaly when it comes to selections.

He's right there in the mix and depending on opposition and conditions will largely determine if he's in or out.

you'd think he'd have been offered some serious coin from overseas too, so all the better for the NZRU.

Out of interest, anyone have any idea how the NZRU would be on protecting any intellectual property Smith or any coaches have when they leave, given it must be a tough industry to try and enforce a restraint of trade clause in your contract (ie you cannot work for any other top tier International side)

Maybe theres a standown period for someone like Mick Byrne before they can assist another test side? I remember reading the abs got first call on some software they use to analyse post match and it wasn't offered to other teams until there was an upgrade which the abs again got first.

Riccitelli was pretty good when he came in to replace Apisai. Maybe he is not the best NZ hooker of round 3 but he's a name for the future, that's for sure.

Surprised they made the call to have 3 games in Rotorua but pleasantly so. We didn't even get a chance to say goodbye properly to the Theatre of Clay.

Righto Bay Union, try not to cock up the pricing at the Domain this season and over-charge for the stands - set a reasonable price and it should sell out.

Actor Russell Crowe has dropped by the Auckland cricket club where his cousin, cricketing great Martin Crowe, first honed his batting skills.

A photo posted to Twitter this afternoon shows Russell, dressed in black shorts and singlet, with members of the Cornwall Park Cricket Club.

Martin, who was farewelled at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell yesterday, was a member of the club before going on to become New Zealand's greatest test batsman.

haha our path to a RS challenge...we need North Harbour to win it off Waikato, defend it against Manawatu, then lose it to Southland, so then we can take it off the Stags.
