Black Caps Tour to Zimbabwe
-
It's funny how we are celebrating these tons, or wondering why we didn't let beej get one when

In 6 months, when we are looking at their records we will be excluding them anyway -

Given the object of cricket is to improve your average, our batsmen will be very happy right now!

We're not India. -

Pleasing to see the entire top order ( sans Nicholls ) get big runs in this series especially given it's extremely unlikely they'll have another bat before SA. You're only as good as what's in front of you but in saying that great to see some ruthlessness. Guptill 127, Latham 241, Williamson 204, Taylor 297 ( without being dismissed ), Watling 190 .......

Ok it's only a two test series, Ok it's only Zimbabwe but fuck that's unheard of in my time as a BC fan.

Everyone quite rightly excited about KW getting the average over 50, it wouldn't be a complete shock if Taylor managed it too. Saw someone comment on FB about how he looks really "happy" batting at the moment. Having not seen a single ball of this series I can't say but he's in some sensational form at the moment.
-

To be fair to the bowlers its the flip side of the coin,

http://tinyurl.com/50-Averages

Last 2 years, out of batsmen who have scored 1000+ runs 13 average 50+. Thats ridiculous. And thats why frankly averaging 30 as a bowler is pretty solid. Be interesting once the new bat thicknesses come in how that changes, all the thick edge 6's become regulation keeper / slip catches, as they were 20 years ago. Same with top edged hooks sailing for 6 instead of caught halfway to the boundary.

When you look at our quick unit, 20 years ago those averages would have been 24, 26 & 28.
-

I hear all that but don't think it's a stretch to say Boult and Southee aren't quite at their best.
-

Yeah, I agree with thaty, Boult seems to have not really kicked on from 18 months ago & Southee has regressed. If you looked 18 months back at Boult & Starc they were pretty close, now Starc is WAY ahead in all conditions.
-

A huge amount yes. Compounded by us picking a shithouse medium pace dibble bowler to replace him. While Starc was getting Donald & Gillespie.
-

I think the reason they're struggling is pace. When Boult was threatening everyone he was bowling in the 140km/h.. or very close to it..

These days he dobbling in around 130km/h

Yep - there's no substitute for pace - especially when the pitch is doing nothing.
-

Collinge and Hadlee - although they didn't overlap much

True, he was pretty good but most of Paddles career overlapped with a bunch of fucken honest toilers as opposed to outright stars at the other end. That helped him get as many wickets as he did ( not for a second suggesting he's anything less than a legend but it helped he didn't have another spearhead at the other end like so many others did )

Sir Paddles brother could have been foil to the great man if injury didn't persist.
-

Boult's never regained his pace after his injury.

Southee has always flattered to deceive - Occasionally brilliant usually quite toothless

Yeah, Southee had a great patch when he had Boult at the other end firing on all cylinders. But on his own he's never been world class - he's very effective when conditions suit though.

It is a shame Boult hasn't regained his pace since his injury, he was on track to be one of our best ever. Just another in an outrageously long line of NZ bowlers to have their careers impacted by back problems. It really is a curse for us.

That said Boult is still a very good bowler.
