Pukunui is a reference to the childrens book character rather than my ethnicity or waist line. I was a tall skinny white guy when i signed up. That was 10 years ago and not so skinny now, so maybe the name is becoming more appropriate. At least im well over 6'2.

My mate is into this stuff and we had a yarn about how trippy it is. Wouldn't help to have divers at the bottom as they can't give him air (pressurization) or even escort him to the surface (would need to stop to decompress) if something goes wrong.

He is totally alone which just blows my mind. Especially when he hits the bottom, fuck he must have ice running through his veins.

Which arse clowns? The germans or maccas? -

For anyone who knows this famous dive site in Dahab, Egypt, this is incredible from Trubridge:

Awesome video too

"The first no fins, no suit freedive through the Arch, a 30m long tunnel connecting Dahab's Blue Hole to the Red Sea at a depth of 55m.
William Trubridge is the world record holder in unassisted freediving."
-
All legal fishing vessels will have the Automatic Identification System which broadcasts their identity and location.

Any vessel that can goes into protected areas can be easily identified and procescuted.

Illegal vessels, on the other hand, don't broadcast AIS. They aren't likely to be NZ boats however so calling for a ban on NZ fish is stupid. -

It is a weird one tho eh... hes the world record hold your breath deep underwater champion... its staggeringly impressive physically - ie pushing the human body right to the extreme, but there's a big bit of me that goes "um... why?"

Its a bit like Felix thingy who sat in a balloon. Then fell out of a ballon a long way up.

Actually, its several knotches better than that.

Isn't there a variation of "freediving" where they don't even swim, they just hold onto a sled that drags them down? So its like "I'm the champion at holding a rock & jumping into the fishing hole". I totally did that as a kid. Once I touched an Eel. I think.
-

We were talking about this at work yesterday.

I guess it is just like saying, why try and jump a long way into a sand pit or jump over a bar on to a pad.

I guess it is just a test of being the best at something, no matter what it is.

If I was to try and be the best at something, I guess I would have to choose something like "Can still hold a conversation after eating the most chicken wings and drinking the greatest quantity of beer." I wouldn't win either one outright but as a combo or "medley" for want of a better term, I think I would stand a chance!
-

plenty of sports you could ask the question about...discus...shot put...butterfly stroke...triple jump

you can see the reasoning behind some like Javelin, races etc
-

McDonald's use hoki which is sourced from the west coast of the South Island a decent distance away from land, the Maui dolphin lives near the top of the north island a lot closer to the shore too. It's a bullshit smear campaign he should have avoided joining , beside which considering the size of the Maui dolphin population they must have a genetic diversity on a par with a packed Dean's stand so they are basically fucked anyway . -
