It must be the week for announcing new coaches. Strawbridge seems to still have a role at Waikato.

The Waikato Rugby Union would like to announce the appointment of Ross Filipo to the position of the NPC Head Coach role.

Filipo, 41, has a significant history in the game as a player, having played for the All Blacks, Crusaders, Chiefs and the Wellington Lions. He has also been quietly building a coaching portfolio that includes stints with local club rugby teams, Hamilton Marist and Taupiri Coca Cola in Japan and two years with the Waikato NPC team.

Recently, Filipo, has been working as an RDO (Game Developer) at the Waikato Rugby Union, delivering the game to the community and coaching courses to aspiring coaches.

Director of Rugby, Andrew Strawbridge, says “Ross has displayed a real understanding of how to develop players and how to create clear expectations and accountability. He cares for the player and operates a secure rather than a comfortable environment.”

New Waikato head coach, Ross Filipo, said “It is a very special year for Rugby in the Waikato being our centenary year. I’m excited to take part in the shared responsibility of honoring our past, connecting with our community, continuing the momentum created last year with the team and trying to elevate it further in 2021.”

@tim Southland have been very busy signing new players, this year. Signing Squire would be a major boost.

Have they found more gold at Orepuki?

    @yeetyaah

As the article says, Filipo has been part of the Waikato coaching team for the last 2 years so has been promoted as Strawbridge moves up. Director of Rugby is a very European thing.

From the outside looking in there have been a few changes in the Waikato coaching group in the last 2 years. Roger Randle must have focused solely on the Chiefs last year as I never saw him pre-game on the field. Nathan White could have been replaced by Filipo? Rhys Bayliss was also involved and was the assistant coach often interviewed on Sky.

As always, results will dictate whether this is a good move.

    Dermody heads South

    Full article:

    Dermody heads south

    Dermody heads south
Clarke Dermody, a no-nonsense Southland prop who made three appearances for the All Blacks in 2006, has been an integral part of the Mako success story over the past three seasons.

He joined Ta$man in 2018, when Leon MacDonald was head coach, helping them to a Mitre 10 Cup semifinal that year.

For the past two seasons he has shared the head coaching role with Andrew Goodman as the Mako have become back-to-back premiership winners.

At the start of the 2020 season, Clarke decided it was time for a change to his regular workload, which has involved seven seasons coaching the Highlanders, followed immediately by provincial involvement, firstly with Southland, then the Mako.

This year he will continue to coach the Highlanders but will take a break after the Super Rugby season is over.

Southland coach Dale MacLeod is frustrated the 2021 provincial rugby competition format has yet to be firmed up saying it had made planning challenging.

He also suggested a move to a North-South pool format would be the “worst decision” New Zealand Rugby could make.

“I wouldn’t have a clue what [the format] will be. By now I would normally have done our planning, we’d know where we are going and would have started to book flights and accommodation.”

MacLeod did add that whatever format they ended up with they were ready to take on the challenge.

He has made significant head roads into building its 2021 squad with fullback Josh Moorby and lock Mike McKee the latest signings announced.

MacLeod believes both have the potential to play Super Rugby.

i wonder what his long term plans are, i was quite keen on him taking over the Landers when Brown was saying he didn't want the big job, hopefully still on the cards eventually

@yeetyaah They've picked up Losi Filipo. No longer wanted by Wellington?

That’s very interesting I guess he didn’t really feature at all for The Lions.

    Some actual communication from Waikato.

Josh Coffin is a mate of my cousin. His dad is Phil Coffin who played for the Hurricanes in 96-97 and played a couple of non-test AB's games.

Good to see the inclusion of a couple of players (Tapsell, Collard) who had reputations out of school, but I feared had fallen through the cracks.

Ratima had his arm in a sling when I saw him on Super Bowl day so obviously still unavailable. No Sullivan or Te Whare. Is Cobb in a WTG?

@arhs I wouldn't be surprised if he is playing overseas in the off-season like Waaka.
