Never seen it, have heard it's good.......but what's the point in them being there ?
-

we let the Scots play rugby, why is this any different?

Issue is there are different qualificatons by sport to get in aren't there?

Canoeing we get 'a' boat, there was the issues when Waddell and Drysdale were probably the 2 best, but only 1 was allowed to go, but in sprinting, swimming or other events, if you met a certain time/distance, then you qualified.
-

Good night, a couple of medals for NZ, and Fiji's gold being awesome.

That sevens final was ridiculous, it looked like men against boys, by god those Fijians are big. Couple of thumping tackles, a counter ruck, and then some 6'5 105kg bloke is off up the field with the ball held in one hand like it's a tennis ball, who then offloads to another one arriving at pace. Why don't they win everything all the time? It's outrageous
-

It sort of smacks of participation over excellence. In Eddie's case he could have died on those jumps. He had giant balls to do that

There are qualifications that they have to go through to get there. They aren't there because someone at the IOC feels the "everyone gets a ribbon" vibe.

High quality athletes/teams don't make the Olympics because they live in regions where there is great competition. Conversely, if you're the only 100m swimmer that lives in an African region, go and swim in an organised meet, then you're going to the Olympics baby :)
-

The Scots have a glorious record in all forms of the game. Just look at this piece of play from the mighty Gavin Hastings, like Jonah and SBW in the same movement.....

no one cares bro, not even the Scots

Yeah can't compare the 2 in any way, shape or form. Eddie gave it his all and risked his life. That Eric the Eel guy from 2000 got there because his dad was close to the ruling elite. He couldn't even swim properly. Eddie also came close to qualifying for the Olympics in downhill skiing. In other words he was a serious athlete. -

Another medal for the State of Maryland!

Second place in gold medals behind only the USA! (technically, not really)

Look, i know its a Fern thing to bang on about the swimming medals on offer, but Phelps now hitting 22 is just awesome. Smoked home in the 200m IM by 2 seconds. 22 golds now. Fuck.

Maybe soon they will have participation medals.
-

in the case of Eddie the Eagle, the British had a qualifying standard that hadn't been increased for years due to no one competing for decades IIRC, so it meant that if he was to meet that distance at a sanctioned event, then he qualified even though it was well short of what most Olympians were jumping.

I'm expecting to see some 'silvers per capita' medal tables.

The best part of that is when he gets smashed in a textbook tackle and throws the ball away. Gavin "Whining fluffybunny" Hastings.
