A bit of emotion in this one ...
-
Yeah nothing to do with being woke. It's to do with it being a real minority sport that only came about because some Muppet couldn't read the rules of basketball!
-
@kiwiwomble said in Olympics Thread:
i havent read the whole thread, have we talked about the Russian Olympic Committee? thoughts? does it undermine the ban to allow them to compete under a very slightly different name
Of course not. Commendable solution from the IOC to permit hard working athletes to compete and yet punish state sanctioned doping. No one reads or hears "Russian Olympic Committee" and thinks "Russia". Veeerry different.

I have no issue if its excluded for not being widely played enough - that's a perfectly acceptable way to assess something (though I would hope the guidelines are being applied consistently). My point is just that the "must be played by both genders" criteria is completely stupid and should be ditched

Some terrible and sad news here..
I don't know what happens with NZ Cycling post selection processes so am not making judgement but would hope that when an athlete has put everything into their sport including meeting qualification but isn't selected there is a level of care to mitigate the mental impact.
-
@crucial shit thats sad
-
@machpants wasn't it modified esp for women of the time? https://www.latrobe.edu.au/news/articles/2018/release/the-story-of-netball

Depends who you believe, probably a mix of both

@machpants thanks for that

I remember my grandmother telling me that. I wonder if you knew her?
-
@dogmeat said in Olympics Thread:
@crucial I did know a Nana Crucial. Said her young grandson was a right fluffybunny and a bit of a retard. Ring a bell?
That pillow talk ay.

Nah, that would have been her Alzheimer's kicking in. Always mixing me up with my brother.
This was while she was in your rest home right? -
@dogmeat said in Olympics Thread:
@crucial She did mention their were two brothers but I wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt given how she described the second 'boy'
It's tough being the youngest of three. Always forgotten.
-
@dogmeat said in Olympics Thread:
@crucial Nana did say she'd rather forget the youngest. Well I paraphrase "wish the little fucker had never been born" were her actual words.
Aw, grandma's

There will be some tough talking in the wake of this. It is bloody hard though; I recently had someone in a close social group commit suicide. The family knew of the person's struggles but we were all oblivious. In hindsight there were signs. But they are very good at hiding it, and often don't want anyone to know what they are going through. Top level sport is a strain at the best of times, it must be monumental if you are carrying something like mental illness with you

Really shows that we're fucked without the swimming.
Has anyone mentioned that swimming has too many medal events?

People complain about China or Russia and doping, but can we throw some slander around about Italy?
Come from nowhere in swimming, come from nowhere in athletics, somehow produce the 100m winner... stinks to high heaven if you ask me.

Totally, especially after their committee/doping testers admitted their huge probem on doing testing during the pandemic. Dodgy as fuck

Maybe Dr Ferrari(sic), Lance's old friend is working for the Italian team?
-
@barbarian Italy has produced a few world class swimmers over the years so nothing out of the ordinary there.

Yeah they’ve been contenders now and then. But the athletics has a whiff of dodgy.

So I am reading Cricket wants in, pushing for inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles..olympic cricket back on the menu anyone?
-
I mean the 100m champ is an American-Italian who moved after missing selection.
But to be honest I'm pretty suspect of everyone. Given what Russia was up to and the fact that they weren't running away from the competition then probably anyone who is dominant is at best pushing the regulations to the limit like all the asthmatics on the tour de France.

I think he was raised in Italy and is the genuine Fonzie but there are question marks next to both him and particularly his relay team.
-
Lamont Marcell Jacobs moved to Italy with his Italian mother at 3 weeks old.
No doubt they have gained some athletes from other countries though. Two of the Italian shot putters were American and South African.
-
I now firmly believe they're all microdosing and regularly testing to ensure that at any point they're just on the right side of the limits.

Always one step ahead of the testers

The dodgy thing about the 100m winner was his relatively recent amazing run of form, as I understand it he wasn't on the radar 12 months ago and suddenly he is breaking PBs in every race.

At age 26.....Bolt peaked at 22...

I read that he wasn’t even part of the drug testing pool because he was so far outside of the top level. Apparently a supplement provider he was involved with is also under investigation.
Sad thing is that if it’s too good to be true then it often is.

It's a pity that a thread about some awesome achievements at the Olympics has suddenly turned into somethings negative.
I'm going to mute this thread.
