A solid first up throw from Adams with 18.75 m. In the other group, Wesche has thrown a new PB of 18.65 m with her first throw at the Olympics. She looked chilled.

Both threw worse in their second throws. Only a couple of throwers have made the qualifying mark so they are well placed

Great result. I was at school with the son of one of the 1970s gold medal winning team (who sadly died of brain tumour I think)

Where were the black shirts though??!! White is not our colour.

@machpants Yep, even Adams hasn't, but:

Qualification Rules: Qualifying performance 18.80 (Q) or at least 12 best performers (q) advance to the Final

@machpants Of the athletes not throwing 18.80, Wesche is the third best (11th over all) at the moment. If that's correct, she's through!

So, four, now five, years of training. Competitions to qualify for the Olympics. What a peak! Throw a large ball bearing just 3 times, not quite far enough, and go home 🤣

Both kiwis through
