Totally random thought spurred by someone pointing out that the road race isn't the pinnacle of cycling.
Would an Olympic tour event work? Two weeks is a bit short (three weeks for the grand tours), but other events start early. Dunno if it would be practical and goes against the 'host city' idea. But might be cool to see national teams competing in multi stage race.
