We usually had a habit of getting more bronze medals than silvers so that was a welcome change. The flip side of that fact is that some of those silver medals could so easily have been gold.

And a few of those silvers were out and out surprises.

As were some of the bronzes, in track and field no less!! We witnessed the emergence on the world stage of Tom Walsh (with honourable mention to Jacko Gill) and Eliza McCartney, who have the potential to go back stronger in 2020
-

Valerie's silver was pretty amazing after all the surgery last year (she could barely compete) and the years of toll on the body from all the training. She's a great follow on fb/instagram, videos of some of the weights she's throwing around on a daily basis are remarkable.

Yeah, but it's a dumb way to measure it.

It values minor medals as being worth zero, let alone 4ths, finalists, and also rans.

Discussion of spending is a worthwhile topic in this age of central funding for Olympic athletes. But the first rule of discussions of spending is dont use dumb emotive maths to make your point. -

I thought it was a bit of a mess of an event, especially with all the empty seats, feral Brazilian fans and the way they fucked over the Paralympics.

But the athletes did what they do best and made that mess into a great show regardless and our NZ athletes in particular were fucking awesome.
-

Another measure was, for the entire medal haul, GB people paid equivalent of £1.05 each. Money well spent imo.

The empty seats detracted from the event especially in the track and field. In Japan they will have none of those issues, everything will be super organised and the stadia will be full
