Wise words from Steve Tew. I hope The Silver Fern will take a similar stand against racism and homophobia and for diversity and tolerance in the months and years ahead. -
My understanding is the environment is already good and the players are happy, joyful and insouciant.
-

I understand it's about the role model thing for young, maybe insecure and still closeted gay people, but it's a bit sad that it's still even a topic. What people enjoy sexually should be their private business and up to them only (as long as no living thing gets harmed). I guess your view on homosexuality heavily depends on the environment you've grown up in, and seeing as I grew up in Cologne, which is like gay central in Europe, I'm probably pretty oblivious to how hard some gay people have it growing up somewhere less open minded about these things.

just say the words bro, we wont think any different of you!
-

I find it really strange that people can be so interested in what other people do in the privacy of their own bedroom. Creepy really. When I meet someone, who they have sex with and how they do it are not really at the top of my list of things I want to know about them.

We could delve into another debate on religion here... :)
-

Yes, we will be making announcements soon on a plan of action to combat the increasing bigotry towards hetrosexual white males.

Stay tuned for updates.
-

Good god, you're a drama queen.

Just to confirm, I'm not using the word ''queen'' in a homophobic way.
-
Is this really an issue anymore? Some activists and the perpetually outraged will say it is. And yes there are some Neanderthals who will be homophobic no matter how much sensitivity training they receive. But, it seems to me that when a celebrity or sportsperson comes out, the general reaction is a massive gallic shrug. I don't think people genuinely give a shit anymore.

I find it a bit weird when Tew says stuff like "sexual diversity". How about:

"The NZRU doesn't give a shit about what you do in the bedroom, the colour of your skin, or the God you may or may not believe in. Be a good person and treat others with respect and dignity and there will always be a place for you in NZ rugby." -

This announcement will be welcomed from Queen Street to Lambton Quay and beyond.

Just to confirm, and like Smudge, I'm not using the word ''queen'' in a homophobic way.

Tew has already pointed to the women's national 15s and 7s teams as having [had] players who are fully fledged Lesbian New Zealanders (not sure whether this refers to current players, or former players such as Louisa Wall). So clearly any such "bigotry" has not denied [is not denying] Lesbian New Zealanders a chance to represent their country.

If so, this policy must be fairly and squarely aimed at the mens' game - does the term "gay" exclusively mean homosexual male (I don't actually know)?
-

I want to know Pinetree Meads views on this. He's probably trying to come to terms with the fact that lots of current All Blacks not only don't own or work on farms but many haven't even SET FOOT on one.......He would have loved it when Hayman, Hore and Woodcock were in the front row together but would be less enamoured with pretty boy homos from Auckland like Ali Williams and Troy Flavell sticking their hair gelled coifs between their manly buttocks.......

I'm concerned that you use the word "Yay" as well Hooroo.......
-

From what I hear at the sideline or in the stands when watching club rugby, or read about in the media, it is still an issue. The bigotry and name-calling is sometimes terrible. Homophobic, sexist and racist abuse is still widely prevalent among some NZ crowds. Having racial diversity in the ABs hasn't stopped that, so I'm not sure having an openly gay All Black will stop homophobic behaviour, but it may help to a degree. And it's not just about the crowds; it may also help gay players to come out of the closet.
-

Pinetree is quite open minded, his last book was written around the mid nineties and he named his favourite players as Mehrts and Fitzpatrick. Neither fits the mold of a weathered old farmer.
-

Not really. The last time I heard really bad slurs against players (2 months ago), I was watching club rugby in the Naki.
