Blues tended to be "saved" by letting in a try. Refs are very reluctant to yellow in those circumstances anymore.

Yeah but if they also beat the Reds then they will need to beat Moana to get up to 4th.

He does get a bit of extra leeway at breakdown time yes (especially at home).

Great result for Moana Pacifica but Gardner is a ref who favours the underdog. Case in point is him penalising the Blues for sealing off when they were hot on attack looking to go back in front. He then proceeded to watch MP do pretty much the same thing going off their feet and sealing off at every second ruck on the way to putting the game virtually beyond the Blues by getting two scores ahead.

The tackle stat is what I like there. Most of our 7s end up making 20-30 tackles a game with next to no impact on it, and end up getting praised for it.

Riccitelli got away with some no-arms tackles near the goal line. I've no idea how Gardner didn't see that.
