guys like C Christie adding some energy
He took his chance. I wonder long term his correct position is blindside? He's played there for NH before

Lakai and Suafoa both had disappointing games on defence
PL made 10 missed 5
CS made 12 missed 5Yeah Suafoa is an interesting case. He's our best bet at 6 for now, but a step down from Ioane . Not saying he's not physically commanding, but he's not as physical in the tight as Akira was especially last year.

@chchfanatic Great post!
Speaking of Sotutu, how come he got red when Cam Millar got nothing on Friday night?
Watching it again, Sotutu should have only got yellow. Hard done by.
I genuinely have no fucking idea how they judge cards anymore. People try to make out there's a process being followed. If there actually is one then it's a shit process.
People laughed at me a couple of years ago when I said someone should use AI to decide on which infringements get which punishment. The tech has advanced so much I reckon it would work. And besides it can't be any worse than the shit we have now
It would be just as dumb as now because it will have been trained on dumb decisions.
Would we feel better about it knowing that dumb AI was making the decision rather than dumb humans - maybe.
I'm sure they can make a library of correct decisions for AI to base it's decisions on. I do that all the time with CF Jr's homework
Who is making that library?
Just as important, how to agree on criteria and threshold for each card? No simple answer, but the current system is a mess, with vague attempts at guidelines often ignored as referees and TMOs make shit up to suit themselves. But, just as tech has rendered lines people in tennis redundant, and with the NFL apparently about to employ AI for some decisions including deciding on short yardage 1st downs, ultimately the tech will make more consistent decisions

Millar might yet get cited after the fact like Paisami. A poor reflection on BOK.

Telea's slow eh?
Maybe it is a bias as I said he looked like carrying an injury last year but he looked a lot quicker to me than before.

Exactly. Imagine the outcome of a dataset that includes the howlers of Gardner, Leckie, Way, Murphy, Seconds, Ravashinge, Jonker...

At the end of last year I wrote a bit about how I think rugby has changed and that "taking the three" isn't always a great option.
Canes appear to have had the better of most of the stats and kicked five penalty goals, while the Blues kicked none.
I think the Canes would have been better kicking to the corner more often - and especially in Super rugby this year, where tries are coming thick and fast. Might have been a strategy that cost them the match.

I was really bemused that the Canes stopped using the maul as an effective way of attacking the Blues. There were two times that I can recall where we were able to march the Blues down the field but when we got into the red zone we opted to take the shot at goal instead of chancing our arm and going for the lineout and attacking them there. I thought for the most part on Saturday the Canes were the better side and were really able to pressure the Blues in most areas. If they want to be there or there abouts at the business end of the season the Canes will need to start finishing off these games. Getting a few key players back will help but the irony of it all is that the lineout opportunity we had right at the end of the game, we chose to run it which eventually resulted in a knock on. I feel like maybe having four captains (two on Saturday) might be counting against us. We need clear decisions as we are not making the right ones at key times atm.
Positives from Saturday:
- Harry Godfrey - I think we've found our ten. Please please please persist with him at 10 and stop shifting him back to 15. Godfrey moving after the break definitely changed our attacking shape, Hohepa was just way too slow.
- Our loosies - Lakai and Shields had very strong games, Kirifi was also prominenent at times. Time for the tight-five to front.
Negatives:
- Discipline and handling - the Canes are still giving away soft penalties and are being heavily penalised for it through cards. At times it also seemed like there were spiders on the ball, far too many handling errors.
- Defense: without our defensive maestro in Proctor, we keep getting caught out in the wide channels. Sullivan is still struggling to handle this area and Fine/Naholo are cutting in far too often which keeps opening up space for the likes of Telea'a and Clarke to run rampant (especially in the last twenty).
The next two games are massive for the Canes, win both of them heading into the bye and I'd be pretty happy considering the injury toll. We should then get a few players back to hopefully make a good run at the playoffs.
