The Henry injury and India's home ground advantage proved obstacles just too big to overcome in the end.
I go against the grain a bit and say that Mitchell and Phillips did exactly what we needed them to, or we were in danger of losing the game in the first 20 overs. Problem was they didn't up the rate soon enough; once we got to the 40 over mark at 175 odd we should have put the foot down and aimed for 10 per over from there, 275+ would have been a very challenging score. Unfortunately Phillips got out at a very bad time just as he was about to do that, and I guess we have to give credit to the Indian spinners who were nearly impossible to hit to the fence on a slow pitch. Once their pace men came back on we got going.
That was a really good campaign overall though, including the warm up series. Lots of different players contributing to get us to the final, we still have stacks of talent in this team, far more than we have had historically.
Not to moan too much but it was a shame we had to play the final in Dubai against a team that had played every game there, given we had acclimatised as much as we could to Pakistan conditions and were playing well there. That does put an asterisk next to this W for India who had a distinct advantage over every other team.
Yeah agree with your post Mitchell had to dig in to save the innings or we were all out for 150 ,
All very well saying he was slow but he did well to keep the innings together.
They just out smarted us with their bowling plans on a pitch they knew inside and out.
Final was stacked in their favour and we took it close credit to the team for getting that far in those conditions. -

We really needed one more accurate spin bowler, not sure Sodhi would have been the right guy but he definitely would have had more to offer than Smith.
In hindsight the selection of 3 seamers was folly. Should have tried not to compound the mistake and just bowled all of our slow bowling part timers instead
I have a lot of sympathy for the coaches and selectors. We prepared for and selected for Pakistan, and we won every single match we played in Pakistan. One team didn't have to do any of that, all they had to do is put their feet up at a ground they already knew extremely well and wait for the other sides to turn up weary from travel and try and beat them against the odds in different conditions.

Yep especially considering how much Smith didn't contribute ( feels rough writing this, he is a talent )
Jamieson and Phillips only bowled five overs each.

Agree 💯. They will celebrate, but it's a hollow victory to me

@canefan It's a shame Chapman doesn't seem to bowl these days as he could have bolstered the batting and added another SLA option. Another batsman (Chapman
or Conway) may have also allowed them to take a more attacking approach through the middle overs (although given how well the spinners bowled it might not have come off).If they were picking a squad with just Dubai in mind they might have also included another spin option.
Overall, they've done brilliantly well across the tri-series and Champions Trophy with the batsmen standing up and the fielding lifting (they showed a stat at the start of the final that NZ had the highest catching percentage 91%). Ravindra and Phillips were tournament stars with their batting and Phillips's stunning catching.

Fuck them. It’s only ODI.
This’ll be forgotten by the end of the week but we’ll never forget 3-0 in the most important format in their own backyard.
I was thinking the same thing. It was a disappointment to lose, but hey the deck was loaded in their favour, and I wouldn't swap that trophy for either of these

Amen to that.
I’ve always looked at test cricket as the ultimate compared to the other formats

I was more gutted about losing the ODI final in England. We was robbed that day
Considering the BCs at time woeful test history compared to usually being at least here or thereabouts in the shorter forms it is pretty surprising we haven't won more in the shorter formats.
We'll always be the inaugural test champions though and that is magic.

Yeah, India's ground advantage was a factor, but the ODI final against England hurt the most because outside of the crazy umpires decisions we actually won the match losing less wickets overall, but had it taken from us due to that bizarre boundary hit rule that has never been used for any other tournament. I don't think I'll ever get over that, that was our chance to win the thing and instead the ICC made a farce of it all.

Without dwelling too much on it were the teams even aware of this ridiculous rule ?
It is stupid because surely it's irrelevant to some extent how many boundaries are hit, more impressive to get there with less wickets lost ?
