Black Caps vs England Series
-
I'll say one thing about England.......
They turn it up when I least expect it. Was pretty confident when we toured there in 2022, I thought man for man we were the better side. Lost 3-0.
Touring here after our magnificent victory in India with a couple of relative unknowns I thought the BCs would be buoyed enough to do the business but we're staring down the barrel at the end of day two of the second test.
Bazball is pretty awesome when it comes off.
-
@MN5 I'm pretty much with NQ for this series.
We've really rolled over with awful catching, poor selections and then a terrible batting performance in the first innings of this test.
England come on a Christmas tour and we've really wrapped up a nice big present for them with a big red bow.
It has been pretty poor by a significant number of the players - and support staff.

Oh and Bethel, at three is a joke, don’t care what he’s shown in the nets, he hasn’t played enough FC cricket to prove he deserves a spot in this team. The Key, Mac and Stokes team have basically disappeared up their own arse
Some would say this has not aged well...
However and acknowledging that I've only seen the highlights, whilst he looked comfortable and also looked like he belonged at test level it has to be said that in both of his good innings he has come in at a time of no real pressure. Also he has been lucky in giving away a good few edges that in other times would have been out.
As someone else on here has pointed out, Steve Finn had a good article on the difference between county and test cricket although that was mainly aimed at the bowlers and suggested that a good record in FC cricket is not necessarily a requirement at test level. So far Bethel seems to bear this out but it is of course very early days.
I'll see if I can dig out the article.
Edit: And here it is:-

New Zealand will be batting when the pitch is best. Looks like we'll have 2 and a half days to chase 700. Run rate won't be an issue. History making final innings coming up.

Love your optimism
-
How does a team manage to have batted and still be behind by 533 runs after only two days?
Unfortunately these clowns have won themselves a massive reprieve after doing the unthinkable in India.
-
The averages tell a bleak story - picking a joint team at this point - Kane for Crawley and Henry for Woakes are the only NZers who make a joint team on form.
Philips is a little unlucky - as is O'Rourke whose average would be better if the NZ catching had been better.
-
Windy today.
England struggling in the conditions, both batsmen have swung and missed already.

The wind will make bowling on days 3, 4 and 5 difficult.
The key will be surviving the 3rd new ball.
-
The only thing that will save us is rain
-
So surely they declare now? Bizarre not to, NZ won't even score 300, but they have the smallest chance of batting out a day and a half.
-
Root brings up the hundy with a ramp shot. Classic McCullum.
O’Rourke brings up the ton too. 0-103.

They’re taking the piss now ( if they weren’t before )
This is entertaining and horrific all at the same time.
-
Wow, fucken awesome catch from Blundell, as good as you’ll see.
England declare. We’re chasing 582 for victory.

That's a weird decision. Is weather thought to be a factor?
Surely the better play would have been to make us toil in the field for another couple of hours.

She’s grey and windy out my way. Rain is on the radar this evening

Stokes declares one run short of a half century.
Definitely a team man who doesn’t seem to care much for individual performances.
Gotta feel for our openers, both in questionable form and England will be absolutely fired up.
-
No double hat trick for Atkinson.
We’ll take that win.
-
Conway clean bowled by Woakes for a duck.
The woes just continue for the poor guy, really sad to see.
KW in.
-
Great decision to have an unchanged team....
-
All we need to be is 2-3 down at 80 overs. Their bowlers will start to cook, and the next 80 will be easy batting amiright?
-
KW gone for 4.
Someone forgot to remind Woakes he’s playing overseas and supposed to be shit.
No pressure on the rest of the team

Stead isn't known for making big decisions. He and Latham can't justify selecting the same team - again.
-
Carse comes on and takes a terrific caught and bowled.
Latham gone, 33/3.
Provided Ravindra and Mitchell each get a double ton we should do this pretty comfortably

Agreed.
only 550 to go.
-
Where do we send the bill for playing the entire England team into form?
-
Rachin goes - and out strides Blundell batting at 6 - again!
-
Stead to ChatGPT - "Who should bat at 6 for NZ in this test"?
"Tom Blundell has batted at 6 for New Zealand for the past three years...."
"Aha - you bewdy, I thought it might be Tom"!
-
Oh perfect, Southee can come out and smoke 77 in a hopeless defeat, thus completing the circle of his career. Just a shame he didn't manage a 5fer as well. No need to select him in Hamilton.

I'll be amazed if they don't pick him for Hamilton in his final test.
TBH - I'm quite supportive of it. The series will be gone - may as well give him a respectful farewell.
If they were going to leave him out - this was the test to do it.
It would be madness not to bring Will Young in for Conway. Blundell should need a hundred here to save himself - but, we don't have a back-up keeper in the squad (it's presumably Conway) so I'll be pretty surprised if they bring someone else in.
-
Rain dance! Rain dance! Rain dance!
-
Couldn’t really ask for a worse set of performances following India.
-
Ravindra gone.
He is far more style than substance overall
-
To think there's another humiliation to come. From a three-nil whitewash in India to a three-nil whitewash at home.
-

Doesn't have to be Ravindra and Mitchell to get the double tons you mention.
Phillips and Blundell, with some chip-ins from the lower order will be fine also.
-
What time does the Aussie game start?
-
Blundell saving us from an absolute humiliation.
Mitch Hay can unpack his suitcase and if Phillips hoped to bat at 6 anytime soon he can put those thoughts from his mind.
The way he got out he's more likely to move down in the order!
