It has to be the Black Caps in my completely unbiased opinion 🙂 Just the context of it being basically impossible to fluke a test win, the fact we haven't won there since 1988 as they are just so hard to beat at home, the hiding we got from Sri Lanka in the leadup, missing our star player Kane, and to top it off bowling them out for their lowest ever total at home which is a record I'd expect we keep for a very long time. It was an incredible performance against all the odds.

    Burn the Infidel!!

    Banning offence.

Villa were good for the win but on another day Fulham could have snuck a draw. Your first goal wasn't even on target until it took a massive deflection, then you're third Diop basically took the ball out of Leno's hands for the own goal. Plus our missed pen

TBF if Anderson didn't take Watkins out he should have scored.

Only sporting disappointment of the weekend.

You're right, you should have been 3-1 up with the missed pen and Jimenez putting a header wide from half a yard out, but Rogers also missed an open goal for us too just before halftime. 4-3/4-4 would have been an appropriate scoreline. Tielemans does have a killer pass too it must be said.

Anyway, we'll done to the cricketers as well, great stuff!

Black caps for me but white ferns T20 close second. Winning a world cup is a massive achievement, regardless of what happens in the other knockout games. Devine/Bates/Tahuhu storyline adds to it as well (three oldest players to win a T20 world cup).

But winning a test in India, against India by 8 wickets including absolutely humiliating them in the first innings is just the absolute pinnacle. Might be my second favourite ever sports victory behind winning the WTC. The only thing better than beating India in India would be beating the Aussies in a boxing day test.

Was this the greatest weekend in New Zealand sport?

Was this the greatest weekend in New Zealand sport?

How good was that? Success on the water, the cricket pitch, the football field and the netball court - the wins kept coming.

Black Caps number one - a new era perhaps without Kane, just hope it doesn’t all come crashing down in games 2 and 3. WC win second simply because it is T20 and the cards fell our way with removal of Oz and Poms but still a tough game to win. Netball third simply because we bet OZz and AC fourth because we are sort of expected to win it. Not a win but an honourable mention to Liam Lawson to cap off a good few days for NZ.

Reminds me of a weekend back in 89. When had:

    • Greatbatch miracle stonewall at the WACA
    • ABs test win on tour of Wales/Ireland
    • Kiwis test win on tour of GB
    • Horlicks winning the Japan Cup (richest horse race in world at the time)
    • and, I think, Peter Blake in Steinlager 2 winning leg of Whitbread Round World Yacht Race, maybe into Fremantle (and probably Grant Dalton coming in second).

From memory . Some details, possibly the Whitbred may be mis-memories.

I'll take caps, then netball ... I'm just glad I didn't have to choose between the Welly-canes and BoP as the best win.

What is really cool is that there is a wider variety of sports we are doing well at and a number of others we are starting show real promise at.

Had to give it to the White Ferns really, lost 10 on the bounce and then win a WC is some sort of Cinderilla story and a WC is a WC, they are notoriously hard to win.

But yes we were certainly spoiled for choice this weekend!!

    Cricket, cricket, netball and sailing.

    New frontiers for nz sport.

Well, being good at cricket is actually quite novel, tbf.

Couldn't care less about the A Cup now that it's never coming back to NZ. The Silverferns win over Australia, particularly after their series loss to England is pretty impressive, particularly as wins over Aus are so rare.

    Welcome aboard

I can't understand all the love for the netball. It was 1 game, against Australia, who we used to beat plenty frequently (60 of 167 according to this website, with a couple of draws https://netballscoop.com/forums/topic/netball-history-australia-v-new-zealand/)

It's played indoors, with neutral officials, there is bugger-all home court advantage compared to the cricket.

The sailing also had all the global $'s chasing it and we shut that down.

And the T20, while a bit of a hit'n'giggle, is still a bloody world cup that required composure and quality.

I'm cricket, T20, sailing and the netters a distant last

For me, Caps with $25 odds to win a test get it. Ridiculous - probably harder than winning in Australia these days.

Then World Cup, TNZ and then Netball

Sorry @Toddy, only looked at international events 🙂

I think winning a World Cup trumps the other achievements.

Especially for a team that had just lost 10 games in a row

I didn't even know the Silver Ferns played, let alone won on the weekend.
I only saw that the White Ferns were in the finals because I was checking up on the Black Caps on cricinfo..

Sailing, Mens Cricket, Women's Cricket, Netball

Precisely the reason I picked them. To win a WC with their form going in is an amazing turn around.

@DaGrubster I'm not saying the WT20 Final wasn't a fantastic achievement and a great back story especially for the veterans in the side, but my caveats are.

    • The standard was pretty poor this Cup
    • We got trounced by Australia and the draw opened up for us
    • Most importantly it's a bogus WC. It's played every fucking year
