I'd bring in:
- Ish for Santner, but I gather he's not there, so... .... Bracewell, or the team bus driver? Not Henry, because:
- Henry for Southee
- Move Phillips up to six
My wider concern about Conway is the technical problems are undoubtedly known, but are (so far) unfixable against international class bowling...
Challenge if we swap Conway for Will Young, is that Chris is also right about Young fishing outside off stump. It'd be swapping one set of flaws for another...
This is exactly why Bracewell shouldn’t come in for Santner !
I still don't know what they see in Bracewell at test level. Both he and Santner are a waste of a spot. Can't consistently take wickets or dry up runs, can't consistently bat and get significant totals
Exactly.
Didn’t get any wickets, aw but he got 20 odd runs…….
Got a duck, yeah but he got a wicket……
That’s all they’ll ever contribute on a regular basis.

The main issue for me was the batting, no one quite went on and converted a decent start into a great innings.
and why was that? Coz some dickhead doesn't understand the basic fundamentals of watching NZ. We are always doomed right up until the moment after we've scored the winning run / taken the opponent's last wicket.
Get it right next time and "we have no chance".
See?

I very much doubt they planned on playing O'Rourke in all 5 tests on this tour. I reckon they would have planned to rest him in this upcoming second test.
That is now awkwardly off the table. That rest will now probably come part way through the India series after he gets exhausted and spanked.

I still blame @Damo

Objectively. A close(ish) loss in the first test of an Asian tour is par. In this era of no warm-ups.
Just that they fluffed a winning position on Day 2 makes it look worse that the 'before-match' expectations.
In fairness, a test vs AFG literally was the wramup. And it got rained off.

@MN5 I completely agree re Santner (in tests), it also worries me that they will never have the balls to get rid of the captain. Carrying one non contributor is hard enough but 2 is impossible, and probably why we lost this test. We did get close and but for a couple of cm run out, might have sneaked it.
In this test we had three in Southee, Conway and Santner. Everyone else had their moments. Blundell maybe a bit borderline with his batting returns but possibly tidy in terms of keeping, I didn’t watch enough of it.
The big problem is that going into this test if I - and probably most of us - had been asked to nominate three guys who would underperform, these three would have been on most people's lists.
For test 2 - Henry in for Santner, Sears in for Southee.
Our bowling strength is in seamers - the Sri Lankans strength is probably playing spinners, especially our half baked ones - and we've still got Ajaz, Phillips and Ravindra in any case!

Yeah we need to focus on this instead of loading up with shitty spinners every time there is a test in the subcontinent

Lost the toss again, so up against it already

Anyone know why the Black Caps are wearing black armbands?
Paying their respects to the passing of Conway's technique.
LOL good one

Black arm-bands on for the 1st day in Galle to honour the passing of former team manager (1980-90), NZC director & Cricket Wellington chair Ian Taylor.

The captain gets one early then goes for lots.
We’ll see how the rest of the pop guns go I suppose.
Only watching on cricinfo but sounds particularly unthreatening so far.
The last test wasn’t a hiding and the BCs got reasonably close in the end but there were some underperforming passengers in that match.
Some heads should have rolled and it’s ridiculous that not a single one did.
