Wellington v Southland

@foobaNZ same with me, Harkin was awesome against Canterbury. JGB has once again shown his limitations this year in the NPC and I really really hope the Canes aren't looking at him as their third 10 but my gut is telling me they are. Super frustrating.
The other way to look at this is that this is our storm week so Harkin will likely start against Otago on Wednesday. If he performs like he did against Canterbury surely the coaches can't keep ignoring his form.

100% him and Roigard would make a nice combo with their kicking ability.
-
Haven’t seen much of Tom Maiava but this is pretty special.
Anyone know much about him? Don’t think he plays Welly club rugby but maybe he does?

@Canes4life He's got me beat too. Looks like he made the Samoa 7s playing out of the Marist-St. Josephs club in Apia via Hautapu in the Waikato and Randwick in Sydney. https://www.rugbypass.com/news/tom-maiavas-incredible-journey-from-sydney-f45-coach-to-hong-kong-sevens/
Seems to be from Wellington at some stage if this is the same Tom Maiava (captaining the team from fullback) https://www.facebook.com/WellingtonSamoaRugbyUnion/photos/a.1486559238322380/1829821667329467/?type=3
That looks to be a young Naitoa Ah Kuoi on the back right wearing the yellow bib! -

Paulo has been penalised four times in the first half. Shocking.
-
@Canes4life He’s hopeless he’s just there as a big body nothing else even people at his club have said so.

How The Southland player didn’t get carded for dumping Higgins on his head has me beat
Shocking aye. Could have been a red if our guy didn’t tap it quickly.
There’s been some piss poor officiating in this game. Southland player put his foot clearly in touch before and the sideline touchy completely missed it.
-
@Canes4life ref should’ve called him back
-
Wellington end up with a 36-12 win over a tough Southland side. They go to the top of the table with a perfect record and will be backing Ta$man to take the Shield off HB tonight.
It will be interesting to see what sort of team they send down to Otago. I’m sure there will be a raft of changes. I’m thinking we’ll rest a whole heap of players including Numia, Lakai, Delany, Higgins, Umaga-Jensen and Clarke.

It's refreshing to see a 12 cut open defenses with brains and footwork. Riley Higgins is definitely taking his game to a new level this year, same with Tjay Clarke at fullback. If he plays like this for the Canes, Jordie might struggle to get his spot back.
Arguably Wellington's three best players atm in Higgins, Lakai and Clarke were all in the same 1st 15 alongside Rocco Berry who plays for the Warriors. Talk about a wealth of talent. Maybe they should try and get their mate to come back to Union, he would be a handy right winger for the Canes and can follow in his dad Marty's footsteps representing black and yellow.

@Canes4life Higgins got made to look pretty average by Te Tamaki it looked like a couple of times in just the highlights. Let's not get carried away.

So you watched the highlights and not the full game? That's always a great reflection of his 80 minute effort aye.
Go and watch the full replay of the game against Canterbury last week and then tell me not to get carried away. He's shredded Canterbury three years in a row down in Canterbury now, I think I'm allowed to get a little excited of what this kid's going to bring to the Canes on a regular, especially with Jordie on a sabbatical next year.
-
@Canes4life exactly, if he got done like a dinner on defence in just the highlights, it's not a stretch to think there might be something to work on there.
-
@Bones I never said he didn't have work ons. I'm talking about his potential at the next level; he's certainly been top tier on attack though with his offloading ability, his footwork and his ability to get to the edges and put others away. I just hope he can do that at Super and above if he eventually makes it there.
For such a young guy I wouldn't expect him to be the finished product defensively either but for the most part today he defended stoutly, same as last week.
I'm just hoping the Canes can get a good running 10 for him to work off. Don't like our chances though.
