All Blacks vs England I

Ugly win is a win.
Sure, plenty to work on, but it was a win.
I think this would always be a regression on the final if only due to the loss of personell from it, Whitelock BBBR, Smith, Mounga, 4 very keyplayers in key positions and leaders.
A single point win is far better start to the year than a loss.

Just watched this and have not read thread. Thank heaven for Sevu Reece, Telea and DMac, best 3 players on the park! But the tactics were not what I expected. Not enough pick n go down the middle in my view. And lots of half breaks but little continuity.
Pat T was a shadow of his usual self tonight. Thankfully Vaai was a dynamo when he came on. Both hookers were lively. But we could have done with Williams or Tosi rumbling it up.
Still not sure that Rieko is in good form at centre and would be happy to see Procter get a go.
And I was puzzled by a few of the refs decisions. But we probably got the rub of the green. Thought Paps would be the one penalised in that last play but no.
Great effort from England. Their loosies were great.Upvote for sharing comprehensive opinion, but I'm not sure we watched the same game.

Shit that pissed me off for the last few years:
Rubbish kick chase
No ruck pressureTonight was exactly the same. Fucking trash.
One thing I liked better were TJ's box kicks were deeper.

@mariner4life 41 - 10 really hurt, eh.
Must've been the two Blues in the starting pack that did it. Not the coaches or the six who got dominated at Super Rugby level.
Super Rugby was sooo last month.
Move on man.

England played well, looked cohesive. We love not giving the opposition any credit in NZ. The rush defence was very impressive and executed well.
Tight five went well, scrum dominant, lineouts need work, but nothing that can't be fixed. Particularly impressed with lineout, maul defence.
Loosies unbalanced. Play Ardie at 7 or he's a super sub.
Blackadder may have the opportunity to grab the 6....I hope he does as we've fluffed about with Akira, Frizzle who both had moments or the odd great match but never had the consistent performances required at test level.
I hope we move back to specialist 6,7,8 with cover on bench.Dmac got a lot of high balls directed at him, which he largely handled well. But he got poor quality ball, slow, and often static..
I feel TJ and ginga take so long that the runners can't time thier runs...hence static ball. Ratima deserves a go.
Backs didn't really get many opportunities..so happy to give them another go.. (CC starts if fit I suspect)
Certainly a pass mark for opening match against quality opposition.
I'm looking forward to the next match and expect to see an improved performance.

Yeah I’m a bit like that, happy to take the win but my excitement levels are still on hold for now

Not surprised we struggled. $5 at the TAB was silly odds for England - they were a dice roll away from pipping us.
Scrum good, but lineout struggled (as expected). Finau looked good in the lineout early I thought, but I spent the night with a mate drinking imperial stouts and whisky, so didn't really pay much attention to the game.
Noticeable step up from Super. Success in Super used to mean you'd star in the internationals. Hasn't been that way for some time, I think back to 2015 - the northern hemisphere comps are prepping people for Tests more than our domestics. It is a real concern.
Otherwise, a win's a win, take that and hopefully get better at Eden Park. Same issues may not go away though - we struggle to create space on attack, chip kicks still seem part of our game, and the time and space in Tests is so much smaller than at Super.
I thought DMac was fine. TJ and Christie's pass both a noticeable step down from Smith (obviously), but it affects the whole backline.
Perofeta surprisingly good! Delighted for him, but didn't see that performance coming offensively.

@kiwiinmelb think our expectations are unrealistic, history has done that to us, but most other fans are happy to win, by 1 or 15.
Sure this isn't the RWC Final, but winning is winning, and this gives us something to build on, shake off the rust start new combos.

I was reading the comments in an English you tube page video earlier and it’s interesting how they saw it as an outstanding test match and were very happy with their team despite the loss, but overall loved the game.

Telea’s non-chase of the high ball has been ratshit
Still don't think he's 100%.
Telea seems to lack pace? Great in contact.

He reminds me a bit of skudder even though he is very different in style ,
His speed in open space is not great at all but his ability to beat front on defenders is elite .

I noticed that too, his balance and elusiveness are next level but he was bundled pretty easily I thought.

I actually think a tight 1 point win and players being under massive pressure is a really good outcome. It shows exactly where we need to improve. What players need to step uo etc. Had we played Tonga and won by 70 we would be none the wiser.
Fucking well said that man. WC are won by single points as we have seen. we need to learn to be under intense pressure and pull through. The days are gone of the 50 plus wins. in 3 years when we win the next world cup it will have been because of games like this.

You can see why Robertson wants Mo'unga back.
Fuck that man is missed. we need him back to have a complete team. Him Jorden an Roigard IMHO. Sorry for the spelling but had a few Have been up for that last 18 - 20 hours here in Canada. U kn ow I am a canes and Welling fan but I have complete faith in Razor. This man is special. In the next few years I C the All Black dominance coming back !!

@chimoaus said in All Blacks vs England I:
On the positive I enjoyed the game and really looking forward to next week. I am confident the coaches will grow over the season and adapt as they go.
This is the first test and people on here are shitting themselves. I have complete and utter confidence in Razor and his team. in 3 years and 7 years time when we are winning our 4th and 5th world cup all the criticism will be laughed at.
-
Prefer a test like that than a stroll in the park vs Tonga!
Aside from either side of halftime when we played dumb rugby that was pretty good. England played bloody well but so did we generally. Subs were made at the right time. For a first game in charge against a team that came to win I’ll take that.

Mo'unga: 70% win rate as AB 10.
That might improve under a different coach on that basis most of the team had a low win rate under Foster.
-
Mo'unga back is the last thing we need. How many years did he have to cement his spot and become a great test 10? At least one too many.
Time to move on. DMac wasn't perfect last night, but the first half I thought he played really well. Fuck, we even had an exit from our 22 into their half, seems like that hasn't happened since DC laced them up.
Put DMac outside A Smith and I'd suggest he would look significantly better - the drop in the 2nd half looked to me to be much more due to the quality of ball he was getting than anything else. The aimless kicking resurfaced, but that was a feature of the BB/RM years also so I'm not pinning that on him.
