Highlanders v Hurricanes

F*** me that was pretty good.
-
I don't even want to think about that game. Holy shit it was bad, Patchell dropped a performance worse than anything Mitch Hunt ever served up - and that is saying something.
Folau Fakatava about the only positive, I thought amongst that shit show he was really good.
-
Good news, a great performance and another win.
Less good news, Roigard's injury.
-
I had a feeling a toweling was coming. But, tried to talk this into being a banana skin game for the Canes. It certainly wasn't. The most disappointing aspect to the game was the shoddy attitude to defence and breakdowns in the first 30. Just really untidy. Patchell's honeymoon seems over. His flat passing at the line created some opps in the first few games. Now it seems easily read. For all of Gilbert's physical attributes, he lacks the ability to do much at speed. Struggles to change direction and gets found out in D. Fakatava was great. Harmon tried really hard. Naholo out Tavatavanawai'd Tavatavanawai. Some of our guys could develop well around talented veterans. They are judt having to carry too much.
-
Tyrel is a well spoken lad, for some reason I expected him to sound like a meathead.
-
The one silver lining for the Canes with Cam’s injury is that TJ gets plenty of opportunity to push his case to be the AB starter again and then we have a young gun in Jordi Vijoen waiting in the wings. Not all doom and gloom.

Such a stupid rule you can jump from out of the field of play, and take ball back in
The plane of touch must be the most confusing area of law in the game. So easy to simplify IMO.
They should just copy the cricket law.
Ball is out if it touches the ground or something touching the ground over the sideline, or it touches a player that started from outside the field of play.
Simple, easy and done.

I think for consistency they'd have to address the ability of a player out of the field of play to score a try too.

I think the point of that particular law is that the moment the ball is touched it is simultaneously a try and in touch, so it is defendable in principle.
I refereed for 13 odd years and never struck it once. I don't think it is big on the list of priorities.

Didn't see the game. Hopefully injury not serious.

Bloody hell! Little Clan no-nothing shithead injures Roigard! (And I am a Clan supporter!) Shittings!
-
Hurricanes coach Clark Laidlaw was delighted with the Hurricanes’ performance but admitted that Roigard’s injury put a dampener on the evening.
“Injuries are part of the game,” he said. “It’s hugely disappointing for him, not just us.
“We're not really sure what he's done, but we'll get that assessed.
“He went to hospital to get X-rays and get it checked, so we'll find out tonight or tomorrow morning.
“It’s always a little bit sad to see one of your best players pick up what looks like a serious injury.
“...it’s maybe a patella tendon, but takes a lot for for Cam to stay down. He's a pretty tough bugger, so he was obviously sore.
“Hopefully it's not as serious as it would look like.”

Far out that frickin ref should face some kind of censure for wrecking the season of our most gun player. He definitely got in Roigard's path.

That's stretching it a bit isn't it? Ref didn't injure him!

Just watching the game now
Weird 2nd try by the Highlanders. In that it wasn't one
-
Outstanding performance by the Canes. They made the Highlanders look 2nd rate. Except for their 2 HBs and the slightly hot headed but promising FB
For the Canes the forward pack was outstanding. Unusual for the Canes in the past. Lomax is really stepping up this year but Tosi is super impressive too. But all the other tight 5 and replacements were impressive
Lakai continues to impress as does Iose
I was hoping the Landers would do much better this year. But they just look a level below the other NZ teams again. And the injuries don't help

Lomax is not stepping up this year. He was already world class in 2023.

only lost 2 throws v Chiefs one was a bad throw, one lifters missed the call.
He is getting better Strange makes a difference calling the throws they have had Hannah and Cahill calling some games tough on two 21 year olds in their first season.
Sami threw 2 shockers for the Chiefs maybe he needs some lessons as well. -

I really wrapped how Lomax keeps going. When he first started playing for the Mako was when I noticed him and started my rave on him for only one reason. When he scrummed he had an incredibly straight back I though, and was just something I valued highly from props, going back to old days of helping to get power from locks going through (I think), was something I used to always try to drum into young players. Funny thing is I have really taken notice of it much lately, but as you say cg, he stepping up even more this year, almost to point where I would think he would be among first few players written down come test time.

@Dan54
Tosi is the one who has stepped up very significantly this year. Last year, he could not scrum. Now, he is a beast at scrum time. And he is very effective in the loose, making the hard yards and he also has good hands. He is the second best THP in NZ, IMO. I would be delighted to see him get a call for the ABs. -
