Thanks, looks like I won't be heading to the Basin then until later this afternoon. Yesterday was a good occasion but today would have been just as nice, especially seeing Tom Blundell bringing up his first teat century in his first test innings.
The result was a bit of a surprise as there did not look to be any player in our team that had outright gas but what was sacrificed there was made up in the extra grunt and power that gave our guys a couple of tries. Will need a bit of extra speed against Scots after watching what they have to offer. -
The organisation seems to have made some weird changes to the draw.
The Cup SF are now:
Scots Coll v Taurange Boys, k/o 1.00pm
Napier BHS v Hamilton BHS, still k/o at 1.20pmThis doesn't make sense at all.
The first two quarter-final winners were Tauranga and Hamilton, the last two Scots and Napier. The original draw had the Cup SF as Tauranga v Hamilton and Scots v Napier. They have changed that now. This means that Scots has less recovery time and Napier gets an arguably stronger opponent in Hamilton that gets a bit more recovery time. -
Scots got home with a try right at the end of the game. Hamilton look like they will be too big and fast for them in the final. I will wander down to the Basin Reserve (probably abuot a dozen minutes walk from my flat), to take in the last three hours in the hope that I can bring some good luck to our bowling attack.

Hastings Boys just lost the Plate Final to Rotorua 19 - 27. Basically, they lost the game to a very fast and elusive Fijian, who had a bit of help from team mates. Incredible stepper with fantastic speed that lad!
McClutchie, Hape, Robinson, Udy-Johns and Toala were among the players this game, but they were again missing Flanders and Fakatava, and also Naholo didn't play. I guess Flanders and Fakatava weren't available for this tournament, and Naholo must have suffered an injury in one of their games. It was a pity that the commentators consistently had the players' names wrong. Maybe thy had different numbers on their backs than on the team list.
By the way, Tafai Ioasa and Karl Lowe were coaching the team. I have read that Ioasa has taken over as Hastings' head coach from Ozich; is Lowe his new assistant or just for sevens? I remember reading he was involved with Hastings' U15 team earlier in the year.

Hmm, they seem tiny.

About Napier BHS' preparation for the World Schools Festival (2 - 7 April, Paarl, South Africa)
Former Hawke's Bay Magpies rugby coach Brendon Ratcliffe describes his new role at Napier Boys' High School as the most rewarding coaching experience he has had. Six months ago former New Zealand Rugby Union director of player development Ratcliffe was appointed director of rugby at the school and 1st XV coach.
Ratcliffe's first international assignment with NBHS will be taking a 26-strong squad to a new world schools rugby festival which begins in South Africa later this month. Otago Boys' High School and Auckland's King's College will join NBHS as the three New Zealand teams at the 20-team festival in the Stellenbosch wine region of Western Cape Province.
Ratcliffe's troops will play Boland High School on March 31 and Monument High School on April 6. Monument High School is ranked among the top three teams in South Africa. "We're expecting our opposing teams to be big and bulky. Our forwards will be challenged more than ever before. I learnt during my involvement with the New Zealand under-21 and under-19 teams the South African boys play with a bit more physicality," Ratcliffe said. "If you want to compete with them you need to have more intensity and better technique. If you don't you will get in a lot of trouble." Key forwards in the NBHS tour party include hooker/prop Patrick Teddy, hooker/flanker Tyrone Thompson, locks Josh Gimblett and Frank Lochore, who is a grandson of All Black legend Sir Brian Lochore, and loosies Sam Henderson and Luke Russell. Kingpins in the backline include second five-eighth Leo Thompson, first five-eighth/fullback Harry Williams and halfback Angus Kilmister.
The full NBHS squad is: Angus Kilmister, Caleb Turner, Connor Wadley, Fergus MacKinnon, Frank Lochore, Harry Devine, Hayden Davis, Henry Williams, Jack Sheridan, Jayden Stok, Jayden Walker, Josh Gimblett, Keegan Christian Goss, Leo Thompson, Tyrone Thompson, Luke Russell, Manaaki Aranui, Max Anderson, Oskar Lynch, Patrick Teddy, Pereiha Hubbard, Qunta Tawhai, Rob Slabberkorn, Sam Henderson, Tiaki Fabish, Treyah Kingi Taukamo.
2018 College Day (15 April) has a good programme again:
In the wake of the training sessions the 50-strong wider training group have been putting in since November expect the NBHS 2nd XV which will play in one of the feature games at the annual College Day in Napier on April 15 to be a strong side. They will take on the Lindisfarne College 1st XV in one of the 3pm games at the Park Island-hosted tournament being organised by the Saracens club. The other 3pm match will see St John's College host Wanganui High School. The 1.30pm games will see Te Aute College host Wairarapa College and Wairoa College host Freyberg High School. New Zealand's top four champions in 2017, the Hastings Boys' High School 1st XV will take on their Wellington College counterparts in one of the midday encounters while Dannevirke High School will meet Central Hawke's Bay College in the other. Hastings Boys' High School's and Wellington College's 2nd XVs will meet in one of the 10.30am games and Karamu High School and Taradale High School will clash in the other.

This seemed the best place to post this article. I've heard and read a lot of good things about this lad. Reece Akuhata may be a future Magpie.
Larsen has coached Magpies speedsters Jonah Lowe and Sam McNicol at beach sprinting and he said Akuhata is faster than what both of them were at the same age. "I have no doubt Reece will end up playing as a winger for the Magpies," Larsen said. "It would be good to play for the Magpies but I'm focusing on a career in architecture when I leave school and if any professional sporting opportunities came along I would consider them a bonus," Akuhata, who boasts the nickname "Wheels" for obvious reasons, said.
At his school's athletics champs earlier this month Akuhata collected five first placings and two seconds. His winning 100m time of 11.18s was a personal best. "Mason [Magpies winger Emerson] holds the school record of 10.98s which he set in 2012. I'm hoping to better it next year,"Akuhata said.
A second-season player in the school's 1st XV rugby side, Akuhata, will travel to the United Kingdom with the team in October. The team has already started pre-season games. Because of the United Kingdom trip Akuhata, a former Hawke's Bay Ross Shield, under-14 and under-16 rugby rep, won't be chasing any rep rugby this season. "Next year the goal will be to make the Hawke's Bay under-19s," he said.

Info about this year's Hastings Boys HS 1st XV squad.
New Hastings Boys' High School First XV rugby captain, Udy-Johns, 18
His troops have been unbeaten in buildup games and walloped St Edmund College from Canberra 73-7 on Friday.
10 of last year's 24-strong extended squad are in the tour party. Four of the 10, Udy-Johns, loosie Donovan Mataira and utility backs Jordan Thompson-Dunn and Gideon Kautai, were regular starters last year. "Five Year 11 boys have come up from our under-15 team from last year and most are from the Second XV. Expect big things from our winger Michael Naitokani. I believe he will be better than Kini was last year," Sturch said referring to New Zealand Secondary Schools player-of-the-year Kini Naholo who scored 41 tries in 21 games for HBHS last year. Naitokani scored five tries in the win against St Edmund's and five in the College Day 52-5 win against Wellington College.
The HBHS squad for the Japan trip is: Latrell Ah Kiong, Sean Baker, Adam Bibby, Daemon Brough, Emil Crichton, Jacob Dorward, Tama Dunn, Ngiyaani Waters, James Green, Andrew Hayward, Damarus Hokianga-Heather, Taranaki Hokianga, Posala Hunt, Gideon Kautai, Corban Kireka, Rashaan Kupa, Arana Murphy, Michael Naitokani, Eldius Oli, Joeli Rauca, Zac Southwick, Sam Taylor, Blayze-Waiari Taylor, Ethan Temaari-Singh, Jordan Thompson-Dunn, Joeli Tora, Liam Udy-Johns (Captain), Charlie Varcoe, Hani-Ceejay Waiwai, Matthew Wilson.
Interesting what Sturch says about winger Michael Naitokani (expecting him to be better than Kini Naholo).

Are Napier the Hurricanes School to beat?
Napier Boys' High School have continued their commanding from against Hurricanes region opponents, comfortably accounting for Scots College 33-7 in Wellington today. On a heavy surface in Strathmore, Napier's forwards controlled territory and were never seriously threatened by the hosts, despite a brilliant solo try to wing Ethan Webster-Nonu on halftime. Down 21-0, Webster-Nonu retrieved a kick from inside his 22 and turned rapidly beating at least four defenders on his way to the line. It was a rare bright spot in a largely forgettable spectacle. Napier established their lead on the back of good industry by their pack. The likes of Patrick Teddy, Hayden Davis and Josh Gimblett all carried with authority and three tries were created from the 'pick and go' with Davis and halfback Angus Klimister among the first-half scorers. Scots defended stoutly at the start of the second spell as Napier were twice denied tries, one that awarded and later overruled and another that should have been credited, but was missed. Eventually Napier broke through when Scots attempting to clear their own goal line fired a wayward pass which was dived on by centre Jack Sheridan. Napier No.8 Luke Russell had the final say, forwards scoring four of the five tries by the visitors. After a winless tour to South Africa, Napier have beaten the top four sides from Wellington this year and the 2017 semi-finalists, as well as Wairarapa College 50-10 last Wednesday in their annual traditional. Napier starts their Super 8 campaign this Saturday with a home fixture against Gisborne Boys' High School before an eagerly anticipated local derby against reigning National Champions, Hastings Boys' High School on June 16. Scots will seek their third win on the trot in the local competition this Saturday when the hosts winless Hutt International Boys' School. Napier Boys’ High School win against Hurricanes scores: Beat St Pat’s Silverstream 40-22 Beat St Pat’s Town 68-8 Beat Wellington College 34-3 Beat Wairarapa College 50-10 Beat Scots College 33-7
I had noticed Napier Boys' good results since returning from SA. I'm not sure where they're sitting yet and which expectations are realistic. Wellington Schools may be in a dip. But expecting Hasting BHS not to be as good as the previous two years, it would be great if Napier Boys' can go far this year. It would be awesome to have another Bay school in the Super 8 final, or - dreams are free - even reaching the National Top 4. We'll find out soon ...
