Napier could have won their game when they had 2 more players on the field than Rotorua due to yellow cards, but failed to take their chances and then lost a player to the bin themselves. Rotorua had some really big boys in their team and it was a very physical game.Hastings lost deservedly. They were quite passive at times and just couldn't get through the Tauranga defence. Hastings seemed to miss a lot of their first choice players. I haven't seen a team list, but Flanders, Fakatava and Toala didn't play and it showed. Flanders was one of their best last year. McClutchie & Naholo were playing well, but some of their team mates didn't have the same fire power as the missing players.
Hastings will play in the Plate Quarter Finals against New Plymouth at 10.40am tomorrow (Sunday).
Napier takes on hosts Sacret Heart College in the Cup Quarter Finals at 12.00pm. I expect this game to be televised live on Sky Sport 2. -

I don't think the Scots part of the name has anything to do with Scotland but with distant ancestry from there I will have to (grudgingly) give them my support just in case there is a connection.
By the way we got dealt to by the Wildcats in the return race down here last night so things could be better! -

Thanks, looks like I won't be heading to the Basin then until later this afternoon. Yesterday was a good occasion but today would have been just as nice, especially seeing Tom Blundell bringing up his first teat century in his first test innings.
The result was a bit of a surprise as there did not look to be any player in our team that had outright gas but what was sacrificed there was made up in the extra grunt and power that gave our guys a couple of tries. Will need a bit of extra speed against Scots after watching what they have to offer. -
The organisation seems to have made some weird changes to the draw.
The Cup SF are now:
Scots Coll v Taurange Boys, k/o 1.00pm
Napier BHS v Hamilton BHS, still k/o at 1.20pmThis doesn't make sense at all.
The first two quarter-final winners were Tauranga and Hamilton, the last two Scots and Napier. The original draw had the Cup SF as Tauranga v Hamilton and Scots v Napier. They have changed that now. This means that Scots has less recovery time and Napier gets an arguably stronger opponent in Hamilton that gets a bit more recovery time. -
Scots got home with a try right at the end of the game. Hamilton look like they will be too big and fast for them in the final. I will wander down to the Basin Reserve (probably abuot a dozen minutes walk from my flat), to take in the last three hours in the hope that I can bring some good luck to our bowling attack.

Hastings Boys just lost the Plate Final to Rotorua 19 - 27. Basically, they lost the game to a very fast and elusive Fijian, who had a bit of help from team mates. Incredible stepper with fantastic speed that lad!
McClutchie, Hape, Robinson, Udy-Johns and Toala were among the players this game, but they were again missing Flanders and Fakatava, and also Naholo didn't play. I guess Flanders and Fakatava weren't available for this tournament, and Naholo must have suffered an injury in one of their games. It was a pity that the commentators consistently had the players' names wrong. Maybe thy had different numbers on their backs than on the team list.
By the way, Tafai Ioasa and Karl Lowe were coaching the team. I have read that Ioasa has taken over as Hastings' head coach from Ozich; is Lowe his new assistant or just for sevens? I remember reading he was involved with Hastings' U15 team earlier in the year.

Former Hawke's Bay Magpies rugby coach Brendon Ratcliffe describes his new role at Napier Boys' High School as the most rewarding coaching experience he has had. Six months ago former New Zealand Rugby Union director of player development Ratcliffe was appointed director of rugby at the school and 1st XV coach.Ratcliffe's first international assignment with NBHS will be taking a 26-strong squad to a new world schools rugby festival which begins in South Africa later this month. Otago Boys' High School and Auckland's King's College will join NBHS as the three New Zealand teams at the 20-team festival in the Stellenbosch wine region of Western Cape Province.Ratcliffe's troops will play Boland High School on March 31 and Monument High School on April 6. Monument High School is ranked among the top three teams in South Africa. "We're expecting our opposing teams to be big and bulky. Our forwards will be challenged more than ever before. I learnt during my involvement with the New Zealand under-21 and under-19 teams the South African boys play with a bit more physicality," Ratcliffe said. "If you want to compete with them you need to have more intensity and better technique. If you don't you will get in a lot of trouble." Key forwards in the NBHS tour party include hooker/prop Patrick Teddy, hooker/flanker Tyrone Thompson, locks Josh Gimblett and Frank Lochore, who is a grandson of All Black legend Sir Brian Lochore, and loosies Sam Henderson and Luke Russell. In the wake of the training sessions the 50-strong wider training group have been putting in since November expect the NBHS 2nd XV which will play in one of the feature games at the annual College Day in Napier on April 15 to be a strong side. They will take on the Lindisfarne College 1st XV in one of the 3pm games at the Park Island-hosted tournament being organised by the Saracens club. The other 3pm match will see St John's College host Wanganui High School. The 1.30pm games will see Te Aute College host Wairarapa College and Wairoa College host Freyberg High School. New Zealand's top four champions in 2017, the Hastings Boys' High School 1st XV will take on their Wellington College counterparts in one of the midday encounters while Dannevirke High School will meet Central Hawke's Bay College in the other.
