Preseason - Highlanders v Hurricanes

@Canes4life I a bit keen on his play too. Looks to have something soesn't he?
-
@Winger yeah Vijoen will be back-up to Roigard eventually when TJ hangs up his boots. He's a real whippet and has a lovely pass on him. In Vijoen, Roigard, Godfrey, Higgins and Love, the Canes have plenty of playmaking youngsters to build their team around in the future. I just hope we don't lose the likes of Godfrey and Higgins by persisting with messy players like Umaga-Jensen and Morgan.
My take on the Highlanders today, the players that stood out for me were Holland, Renton, Harmon, Gilbert, Tavatavanawai and Faleafaga when he came on. The landers definitely look a lot more threatening than last year so hopefully they can take a result like this into the season proper in a couple weeks time.

Viljoen (the midget) looks outstanding so far. Morgan the opposite
Has Morgan ever looked good? Never understood why he was highly rated.
Remember watching Morgan when at preseason game at Levin last year, and couldn't believe how ordinary he looked, hasn't done a hell of a lot to change my mind up till now.
-
@Dan54 yeah and guess who came on and changed the game against the Saders in that game? It was Roigard at 9, and Godfrey at 10. Godfrey looked a shit tone better than Morgan that day, just shows you how bad the Canes are at noticing talent, Godfrey should be getting minutes at 10 but they clearly see Morgan and Cameron as the more senior options. I say if you're good enough, you're old enough. Give Godfrey the 10 jersey.

@Canes4life Mind you the U20s played him at 15 as did The Bay if memory serves me correct. But like you I would love to see him get a run. Seem to recall me raving about him and Roigard after Levin game last year as well.
I definitely think we have a tendecy in NZ to not put to much pressure on young fellas as game drivers. -

I still think Cameron as the starting option and Barrett as the backup. But who next. Not Morgan. He was ordinary a few years back and is worse now. I would give Love a shot and then Godfrey

I think the only reasonable conclusion from this game is that the Highlanders are back, and they WILL win Super Rugby.
This is our year baby!!!!
-
@Winger why is he a long way off? He showed a year ago that he was capable of running the cutter in that pre season game against the Saders. Hawkes Bay need to start playing him at 10 over McClutchie. Clearly no one wants the latter and IMO Godfrey has a way higher ceiling.
The Canes either need to ply Love at 10 or Godfrey. We need 10s that have the capability of setting our backline alight. If we keep Morgan and Cameron in that position we will be winning F all. Hopefully Laidlaw figures this out early in his tenure.

I wouldn't give up on Cameron yet. At his best he's close to AB quality. The coaches just need to work on his consistency
Morgan is a waste of time. He's had lots of opportunities and is barely good enough for NPC rugby
Love and Godfrey have the skills required but Im still unsure whether either will be top quality firsts. But would give Love the opportunity first. Godfrey still has lots of time but both playing first at NPC level would certainly help
But this will be a great test for Laidlaw. Sort it out and he might have awinning future. Not just another average coach who makes up the numbers
