RWC QF: France v South Africa

South Africa, you cruel bastards denying France a final in their own RWC. France were so dominant early on but the Boks just hung in there.
I think I prefer the Boks for the final, it's our turn against them, plus, France in a home final might have beaten us on passion alone. But, if we don't win I would have preferred France to win.
It was meant to be held in SA to begin with. The RWC governing body had advised that RSA were the preferred candidate:

does seem weird it's so long since SA hosted
Was part of the price that Louis Luyt paid to rig '95 that they wouldn't host again ever?

Not that it could ever be proven, but if it ever was proven they gamed the system i would be all for the strictest of punishments. Makes an absolute mockery of the very tenet of player safety.
I know it's all wild speculation, but Rassie is so bad for rugby. And his smug "I'm so clever" face fucks me off.
They have form. The 'medical replacements' rapidly became 'off injured, but cheerfully jumped the hoardings as I left' with SA. So it became a free for all to replace people.

The French were able to make huge in-roads through that SA defense all game, the problem was all the passing and offloads they kept running out of support, and lost ruck ball, either to turnover, or a panicked presentation that got knocked through.
Even that last possession they got off their line, made 60m easy, then one guy got isolated and tried to throw it back, South Africa pounced.
....pounced from an offside position
Agree about the French attack. It's great to watch them open opposition defences up but then frustrating as hell to see them not finish it off.
Yep, nothing worse than opening them up and not finishing it off.
You’re talking about Rugby right ?

It's been a while now, but I recall extreme piss being taken in 96 with "injury replacements". One guy actually ran off to be replaced.

glad you went htere.
Was going to say 'as the actress said to the bishop', but I'll use it here instead. As the actress said to the bishop

@Machpants pretty rare to sit down to a France rugby game and not be entertained, even if it's them losing because they fucked up completely.
France vs England RWC2011 was beyond dire.

That's sad, you should read more. We're talking about books, right

The Springboks bench made the difference except Faf who has been shocking. Fourie and Kwagga fight like dogs on defense and breakdowns, triple trouble with Vermeulen. Pollard but the real stars was our starting backline specially Libbok. He brought a new dimension to our attack. Hard luck to France, beating them in front of 80,000 mean the Springboks mean business.
-
Oh and the ref has been great.

@OomPB said in RWC QF: France v South Africa:

Yup I was cheering France and BOK was fine. The French choked, they didn't have calmness at all- especially under pressure. Kwagga was a game-changer

What has happened to Faf? it was a clear drop in performance when he came on.

A BOK supporter happy with the ref, that is high praise indeed. I assume you will have him next week as well.
-
Easy to get caught up in the frenzy of the first half, but France needed a Cory Jane out there on the wing. That Dupont statue can wait.
-
Watching back now.
I'll say BOK got the call about etzebeth's early knock on wrong. Also, if Penaud gave Aldritt the short ball, they score. Went for the glory ball to the wing. 14 point turnaround
-
@game_film he was a bit quiet, a few times early on he looked a bit shy on taking contact, built into it and got.into.some physical stuff but you do wonder if it was wise to play him so soon.
-
Well, that game did no good whatsoever for my health.
First half was just crazy.
Second half so bloody intense.Well done Boks. Getting past that French team, in France, with their crowd support, is quite an achievement. Very proud.
And before anyone gets too far ahead of themselves, I really hope we focus exclusively on the semi against England for now. We saw what they managed to do in the semifinal at the last RWC. Best the Boks are on their toes.
-
Kolbe is just a magician. DDA and Kriel also great game. what a weekend of rugby.
-
DDA gets a bit of grief on here but i think he's fantastic. He gave the Irish midfield kittens, he was huge today as well. That try was good fucking work.
Jodie Barrett is effectively lanky DDA and yet he's loved. -

@chimoaus and a Waikato/Chiefs supporter.
He allow the game to flow. Ruck more of a battle. The NH refs is much more strict and technical at ruck time.
The replacement for Marx (Fourie) is a specialist poacher.
like for like then!

Kwagga cracks me up- he looks like the Boks were a man short for the match so they just grabbed some oke off his farm on the way to the ground. No emotion, just rips in and gets shit done.
-
After watching the replay again (at ~29 mins) I still think that Reinach is offside as Libbok looks to have got a touch from Penaud's kick.
Poor from the AR.

Hahaha. Wonderfully colourful description.
Yes, At first observation Kwagga just doesn't strike you as a guy who will make an impact. But he has such mongrel in him, he punches way above his relatively small size. And all in that "meh, just in a days work" kind of way. -

Not sure which Saffas you've been dealing with. DDA is very highly rated with all the Saffa fans I interact with.

Surely the WC chokers tag can never be applied to us now after this weekend of semi-finals ...
Gutted for France. But they didn't deserve it, the Boks did.
> Amazing that Kolbe'e charge down was the difference.
Boks with an awesome backline is a scary prospect. Kolbe was unreal tonight
I said at the time that it was amazing that we didn't see a single replay to confirm whether he left early or not - other providers may have, but you'd think that would be the easiest thing for a TMO to quickly check? We check every other bloody thing!
Here is some footage, thanks Andy
-
It's one thing for the ref to miss things. Another thing entirely for VAR to miss stuff. They seem so inconsistent in almost every game
-
Jeez France not dealing well with the high ball. Now back watching and two tries to the Boks
-
France hit back. Stadium explodes. What an atmosphere.
How are any of these players still alive? 22 minutes in and I'm drained.
French hooker is a fucking weapon
-
There. That charge down from Kolbe. That's the difference
