We know refs swallow their whistles at the end of tight games, but that was poor.

Those overhead vidoes are amazing. Show how much is going on. My season tickets at Eden Park were always end on - the best view of who's working and who's shirking. Earl Kirton used to do this too ... 😛 But seriously, it was end on , or prime middle of the middle (which is $$$).

They really missed an opportunity with the waterfront stadium or really redeveloping Eden Park into something great. Get cricket out of the main ground and redevelop the outer oval. The Paul Kelly stand was awesome to watch rugby and cricket from at Jade but it completely dwarfed the playing area and made it feel a lot smaller than it was.

@LatsToTheMax the arrival of the ref at the ruck.

Barnes's angle wasn't great on that ruck. The AR should have called it - it was right in front of him. You can see Ardie yelling at him after the cleanout

ARs are only interested in foul play these days. Offsides and other mundane stuff is below them

The only thing I could see on the Ardie one was that there were still Irish players on their feet and perhaps Barnes thought they had already won it and Ardie was then off the ball.

Less Irish players in the Whitelock one and simpler to see.

@ACT-Crusader the communication, confidence, trust and tenacity shown there has become very rare in the past 6 years. Amazing to watch that and see them just all lined up every time, getting off the ground and not panicking.

I might be getting sentimental in my old age, but that whole sequence made me feel pretty proud as an AB fan.

I didn't believe the ABs had it in them to play that well for that long. At the end of the game I literally laughed out loud - it was a ridiculous win

Found this aerial view of the final sequence. It’s quite good in showing the defensive alignment of the ABs.

Also credit to Ireland as they did very their attack throughout - short balls, long cut outs, wrap arounds - angled runs etc.

Rugby World Cup Quarter Final 2023 🏆 #rugby.

    Defence wins matches.

Interesting listening to Jeremy Paul talking about that in the latest The Good, The Bad & The Rugby Australia & New Zealand podcast.

In what was a decent scoring game and played a pretty high intensity, it wouldn’t be unusual for a team to falter or make a big play at the end.

So with experience off the bench - Whitelock. ALB, Coles, Papali’i - combined with the already on - we genuinely lifted a gear. The discipline to not give away a penalty was something to behold given our propensity to give them away at a high rate in the preceding 3-4 years.

There was variation, but it was so slow. They were obviously not as fit as the abs. Sexton especially is moving about 85% pace, no way he should have been on there. Coach bottled not replacing the star players that were obviously wasted, sexton was the worst.

Spot on. Previous play didn't point towards us having that capability.

Speaking of which, ColesCodie and ScoBa had a habit of giving away stupid avoidable penalties v England. They both ahve to be on their games this weekend. The one that Coles did at the end of the first half in Test 1 against England that led to a try was just infuriating. He's better than that.

ScoBa has an incredible workrate, but has had a tendency to do some dumb things at the same time as doing great stuff.
Going to be a cracking test match!

Codie Taylor was the one who gave away the dumb penalty vs England

I've been pleased with fewer cards and avoidable penalties under the Razor regime so far.

I think this win has to go down as one of the best in AB history, certainly modern history anyway. Ireland should have won that RWC with the team they had and the form they were win, this loss will haunt their players for years to come.

not making it past the quarters. Again. It's a heavy monkey.

Also, remember their lines against SA: 'see you in the final'? We remember ...

Don't agree at all, they had been overachieving with the players they had for years.

Look at the pack weights and the disparity in size AND height between Ireland and NZ before the game - across both forwards and backs, Ireland are very light and skinny in every position by top international standards except prop, most of their best players were in early 30's and over the hill, and they had NZders like Aki, JGB and Lowe starting for them, guys who were not even starting for their SR sides and were never close to making the All Blacks, to say Ireland should have won RWC with the team they had is ludicrous, of any nation at 23 WC they were a 'system' team and benefited from their insane cohesion levels and existing combinations from Leinster.

France or NZ should've won 23 RWC with the squads they had, if not for a terribly skewed draw & poor officiating one of them would've, SA squeaked over the line due to O'Keefe in the France QF, everyone who's analyzed the game sees that.

and yet, they were world no 1. Ludicrous to suggest that the world No 1, who were beating everyone consistently were favourites?

edit: and the Irish bookies had them as 4/6 favourites. I think every bookie had Ireland favourites.
