RWC QF: All Blacks v Ireland

All 6 tries were scored by New Zealanders!

Nick, certainly the occasion was intense and the fact that this version of the ABs did not provide opportunity after opportunity (which was a feature of the last two tests we played against them in 2022) would've been a big factor in creating pressure.
A certain pattern had emerged with the ABs that went something like "if you have enough ball against the ABs they will infringe". We get pinned in our half and the scores will come. Quality coaches would plan for that because that had been the pattern. Today was quite different in how we attacked the collisions and we were the team putting on the points.
Ireland didn't help themselves with some poor decisions and their LO execution was as poor as I've seen for some time. But I come back to the occasion point. The stakes, the hoodoo, the QF monkey, the no.1 team - and then to get a team that has put some old habits to the side and had to play out of their skins (against the some quite frankly bizarre ref calls) just to stay slightly ahead for the whole match.

4 mins to go, on attack and we kick the ball away.
WTF! -

Two - Smith & LF
An astonishing stat in a match like that.

It was noticeable on defence that there was always a forward hanging out in the 12/13 channel in order to help snuff out the threat of Aki

AB pressure didn't force Doris to drop the ball cold.
ABs pressure didn't stop Ireland contesting the high ball on several occasions.
AB pressure wasn't responsible for all the Ireland lineout issues.AB pressure and execution won the game, but the pressure Ireland put on themselves clearly was a factor.
I’m going to bite.
I think both teams played pretty close to their potential. Ireland had similar mistakes they did vs SA (lineout etc). They were poor attacking wise at the end as they were knackered, we had the ball from about 72-76 and our offense was equally uninspiring.
Through the game I thot Ireland ability to make 50-60m was far far too easy. That’s their game and it still got them 24 points. if you offered their fans 24 points pre match 100% would have taken it and been smug about the pending victory. I’d prob not be different if you offered me 23.
Game was won / lost on the 1%ers which happen every match. You don’t notice a dropped ball when you win by 25.
Today was our day. We were never once behind and despite the stupidest start ever, we settled and actually played to a plan. As did Ireland. But Irelands plan revolved around them thinking they were better than us (corner kicks instead of penalties, genuine disbelief at not winning penalties etc). And ours revolved around winning a rugby game against Ireland.

Smith had a shocker start.
Think Roigard deserves a bit of leeway. -

Nailed it.

Yes, the great challenge for us will be getting up for a semi against the Argies after we emptied the tank for this one.
We were in a similar position in 2019 and got blown away.
Keep to the same side as much as possible - don't do any clever shit like basing the forwards around a mythical line-out weakness and picking a lock at 6.
-
That period after Taylor's YC when we were forced to bring Coles on for the scrum, you couldn't script it.
We win the scrum penalty, with 7 in the scrum.
Jordie misses the penalty kick.
Ireland kick the drop out.
We attack and Beaudie kicks the garry owen.
Jordie chases the kick and Ireland give away a dumb penalty
Jordie kicks the penalty goal.
Then after the restart there are a few phases and Murray chip kicks it to our corner, put Beaudie under pressure and we are under immense pressure and concede a penalty.
Ireland kick to the corner and maul it up

Just watched that game winning penalty again
Not only is the breakdown work excellent, but holy shit Whitelock puts in a huge shot to stop old mate dead as well.
Watched it again: retallick with the assist.
If you could pick the least optimum pair of blokes to run at, they're top of the list.
It was weird because up the that point, they'd been shifting wide, dropping it into the boot, and searching for space out wide.
They did that all game and never really set up forward pods to punch it in close. The ABs just spread out and kept tackling.

Unsure if this image has been posted already, but that meant something...
Unlike.
Reminds me of a team too pleased with themselves and about to crash hard the following week.
Reminds me of Ireland 2015 actually.

I watched it (third or fourth time) and tracked Whitelock for that last few minutes. Made some ground the old boy from across the park
