Canterbury vs Wellington
-
Wellington head down south on Sunday to Canterbury having played two Ranfurly Shield games in the last week.
With expectations low, it might be a case of sending a younger team down to try and get the job done and let those that have played longer minutes, have a rest.
I'm expecting us to send pretty close to the below team down to Canterbury with the likes of Kirifi, Delany, Numia, Patafilo, Proctor and Love having a rest.
- Sheck
- Southall
- Lauaki
- Plummer
- Bird
- Shields
- Lakai
- Whitman
- Preston
- Morgan
- Webster-Nonu
- Higgins
- Umaga-Jensen
- Filipo
- Clarke
- O'Reilly
- Orr
- Tevita-Metcalfe
- Ieremia
- Ropeti
- Hauiti-Parapara
- Clarke
- Saumaki
-
Couldn't be any tougher than Cant at the end of an 8 day stretch with 2 Shield defences, so, my expectations are low for this one.
Throw a young ish team out as you suggest and see what happens. Gotta play the long game ultimately.

@Duluth Chicago Doyle on the wing is a bit odd. Would of thought they would have gone for Saumaki, Webster Nonu or Faleafaga who have actually played mins there.
-
@Canes4life Totally agree it’s like oh we have to put him somewhere oh the wing looks good. be interesting to see how Sam Clarke goes at 10, honestly I can see Canterbury by at least 10.
-
@mikey07 will be a worry if Canterbury didn’t win this one. I’ll be surprised if we get within 10. Shame the schedule made it so one of the most important games of the year was at the end of a Storm week. Pretty silly really, especially when crowd numbers are already low. Surely you want the best players playing in the biggest games.
-
Can't see us getting up for this. Bit of a shame as I think one more win would equal our longest historically?
But no choice really after 2 defences to play the top team again. Shield and NPC title again by end of season what's most important obviously.
-
Nice lineout move
-
Good start Wellington. Strong clean outs in the lead up to that try. Shields has been prominent
-
Bredin sucks as a ref lol.
-
And he hates Canterbury clearly.
-
That penalty against Mataele was so funny, Joe Wheeler and Ken Laban couldn't contain themselves.
-
Sam Clarke so much better than Morgan.
-
@Stargazer it’s a nice change that Canterbury aren’t getting the rub of the green for once.
-
@Canes4life And very convenient for you, too!
-
@Stargazer not complaining. 😁
To be fair though, Wellington’s playing all the rugby atm.

@frugby The radio commentators also regularly expressing their surprise about his decisions.
I've no horse in this race, but it has been a shocker from Bredin. Wellington getting every call, I think they'll win the game at this rate. Several potential turnovers turned down to Canterbury, and then a Wellington bloke puts his hands straight on the ground and gets the penalty.
-
@frugby The Magpies have been at the receiving end of his bad calls in games against Taranaki in more than one game. Disallowing tries that were clearly scored; awarding tries to Taranaki that were clearly not grounded. Not following the TMO or not even consulting the TMO when he should. There are many examples.
-
This is actually deadset hilairous. Canterbury fans will be livid 🤣
-
@frugby calm down. Wellington are playing all the rugby atm. Canterbury are the ones that need to turn the momentum.
-
Nothing wrong with that try.
-
@Canes4life To be fair to Canterbury, Wellington are getting all the decisions which is allowing them to play the rugby. I'm not saying Wellington have been bad, because they've been good, but there have been tons of penalties not given which should have been. Hard to play rugby when you can't get to the right part of the field.
-
Lol can Sam Clarke sign for the Canes and can we drop Morgan.
-
@frugby Wellington are dominating. Off course they are going to get more penalties because we are on the foot the whole time.
Man Lakai is impressive. I hope he’s the Canes 8 next year. He’s built different.
-
@Canes4life I hope it's Flanders, but they will probably play him out of position again.

I'm not talking about the penalties awarded - there hasn't been that many... I'm talking about the breakdowns, where I think Canterbury will be feeling rightfully aggrieved they haven't been rewarded, but as I say, it is quite funny to see them on the wrong side of it for once.
Wellington the better side no doubt, they've got some really good things going on up there, thought Southall was terrific.
-
@Stargazer they are probably the two best 8s in the comp. Good selection headache to have.

Some good 8s rolling about. Lio-Willie, Grace, Sotutu, Sowakula and Ioane not too bad either!
-
Wellington have a pretty inexperienced bench so I expect the Cantabs to come roaring back late.

19-5. HT Wellington B are clearly the better side so far. Could have scored another 3-4 tries (unsure what was wrong with the last one)
The backline is functioning well now. PUJ looks better at centre. But the HB, 1st, 2nd combination while not perfect (far from it) is far and away better than the (shit) one last game Poor kicking aside but at least the attack is first rate. It's a joy to watch. Last game vs Ta$man it was dreadful. As bad as it gets.
-
@Canes4life Except the frontrow. Canterbury's frontrow is greener than Wellington's.

I think you're right, the only question is whether they'll have too much to do. Next points are crucial, if Wellington can score next, even if it is only a penalty, they might be too far gone to be caught.
-
Not watching the game but that ain't going to stop me passing on my wisdom, but I am approaching 20 years on the Fern and the entire time Canterbury and the Crusaders have been favoured by the refs. It was good while it lasted I suppose.
-
Geez, how did Murray score that? That's speed!
-
Not a great start from Morgan...
