For the World Cup knockouts, there’s no doubt in my mind that Sam Whitelock if fit starts. One of the all-times greats in Finals Rugby.

I'm still pissed at him for the push on Farrell in 2019. For all he brings, that was a spectacular own goal just as we were getting back into that game.

Yep was the act of a frustrated tired player, Hansen reckons he made a cock up by playing him that game.

If he wasn't going to play Sam, who else was better? That's a management fail in itself

Scott Barrett, with Cane still in - easy

I don't believe Barrett was as good then as he is now. And you don't leave one of your best players out of the team for a SF. Leaving out Kane was a brainfart. Not that I want to go down that track again.....

@canefan Brodie was the problem then, in that he wasnt fit enough, lacked any game time, so that caused the decision to play SB over Cane, SB should have started lock, BR off the bench...but then we could also talk about the failure to attack the English lineout as well, but hey, we should all get over it.

I’ve never managed to see a replay which shows what Farrell did to trigger that. My guess is that if ref had seen it the penalty would have gone the other way.

Owens blew the penalty - Sam went to get the ball quickly in case we wanted to tap and go. Farrell went in at the same time to presumably slow the ball. Desperation or frustration, Sam flung him aside - too roughly. I don't think there was anything else in it. Farrell stayed down and milked it for all it was worth.

Some days Sam would have got away with it - others he wouldn't. It was a bit of a soft penalty reversal, but you can't really argue against it.

Yeah you can argue against it, it wasn't a no arms shoulder so when Farrell is involved that's fine

Fair enough, just my suspicion (obscured on screen) that Farrell gave him a crafty shove which led to the overreaction.

Back to my point about the "exits" (in my day pretty sure we called them clearances) head Mex on Devlin the other day.

Not that I'm a fan of Mex's analysis but he made a good point about not kicking for touch. Mentioned lineout being a strength of those peeps, so the 25% return on the contestable kicks was a good option.

3 syllables. Too long. Unless they rhyme. I look forward to the day they're referred to as "kicky-outies" - yeah, more syllables, but... feels appropriate and very possible in our slide towards Idiocracy.

Yes, if we gained another 10 metres by kicking it out and giving the lineout to the boks, they would have more than likely won the lineout, mauledupfield 10 metres and allowed them to control the pace of the game and dictate how they played.

The contestable kicks creates unstructured play and we won a very high % of them.

When we contested them. Easy turnover when we didn't

I 100% agree, except when there are 2 minutes left in the half, so we get 30 seconds setting the lineout, then 30 seconds of a maul, and they are still 40-50 out. I still don't get the timing of Barrett's ridiculous up and unders when there are only a few minutes left in the half.

What fucks me off is everyone blowing Barrett etc (did you see the breakdown, jesus get their dicks out of your mouth), when it was actually Will Jordan being Will Jordan and Frizell having the absolute best game of his entire career.

Didn't see it. And clearly they weren't watching the same game as us
