Crusaders 2024

We’ve now reached the “he has the full support of the board” phase

@Duluth can they really keep backing Penney if the Saders don't make the playoffs though? I know the Saders have had their struggles, but they still have the cattle to make it into the top 8. Would be a massive failure if they don't.

Penney walked into a stable franchise with among the top 5-6 squads in the competition.
It's certainly far superior than the Australian sides. Hurricanes, Chiefs, Blues, each have stronger squads... but honestly who else?
Last season under Razor the Crusaders qualified at 2nd spot despite being a walking injury-ward for the majority of the season. Razor had exactly the same group of assistants and management staff (except for one change, Hansen) and ultimately got the most out of his coaching staff unlike Penney. The current squad is IMO strong enough to finish anywhere between 3rd and 6th & challenge most sides in a Semi-Final but they won't because they're so poorly coached.
-
@ruggabee Penney also had a crap record with the Waratah's which makes you think maybe he's just a poor coach and doesn't know how to get the best out of his players.
Justin Marshall said on the Breakdown on Sunday that he'll be very surprised if Penney gets the boot, that isn't how the Crusader's operate apparently, but then I thought to myself that the Crusaders simply don't usually lose this bad either so anything's possible.

I'll say one thing
fucking hell the Crusaders had an ugly fucking team, look at those munted heads

I still have lucid flashbacks to the first episode of the breakdown this season as Jeff Wilson brashly opinions "if i look across the squads i seriously can't see anyone but the Crusaders taking out the title again" i remembered that particularly fondly as we got systematically taken apart by the previously bottom of the log and -126 points differential western force in the weekend😅😅

It's not just a Crusader thing. I said it before, but NZ doesn't tend to sack coaches in a hurry. It's almost as though there is a thinking that holding on to coaches who appear to be struggling as some sort of morally mature stance. There is some benefit to avoiding knee jerk sackings but at times I think NZ goes too far the other way and end up sticking with duds for far too long.
Has a NZ Super coach ever been sacked mid season? Or even before their contract had expired?
-
Sacking coaches are always seen as the easy fix but they aren't the ones dropping passes, missing tackles etc. The players need to take some responsibility too.
Penney hasn't really dumped under-performing players from the 23, just some young players (e.g., Kemara).

Wasn't there a Blues head coach from Taranaki that was terminated after one year
Jed Rowlands

@Winger Jed Rowlands.
Just looked it up
They had a number of 1 year coaches after Jed. Were they let go or only signed for 1 year

Hunter was one year for health reasons. From memory I think Oliver was his assistant and got promoted just before the season started.. he didn't get reappointed

Interesting that Aaron Cruden turned down an SOS call from the Crusaders after their 10 woes this year.
