Ashes 2023

@voodoo And @MajorPom. To clarify my first post - stating "it shouldn't have been out" by invoking spirit of cricket or similar.
@voodoo said in Ashes 2023:
On the “take advantage “ point, that’s a lazy example from you sir! Being clumsy and overbalancing is very very different to this situation - getting out stumped or LBW or any other way because you’re clumsy (also called “being a bit shit”) is pretty damn normal in cricket, and is usually significantly contributed to by the bowlers skill. In this instance however, we have an average delivery, well left by the batsman, and a clean take by the keeper, who normally tosses the ball nonchalantly to 2nd slip. This time however he sees the batsman not waiting the extra second, and takes advantage.
It was my response to invocations of The Spirit of Cricket claiming Bairstow wasn't trying to take advantage, therefore spirit of cricket.

Was a good battle between Wood and Labuschagne last night. I wondered how the tail might survive against that pace, and was unsurprised to wake up to find five out became all out very quickly
Random stat: just read Mitch Marsh has as many Ashes centuries as Ian Botham!
As for Bairstow, he probably fits the attacking batsman model more under McCullum, but...

Two from Jonny and two from Joe. Catches win matches.
Can't predict what would have happened beyond Mitch Marsh flogging them to all corners for another 106 runs, but it basically saved our bacon when he decided he had a life and would stop giving fucks.
That innings was basically “Fuck you NTA”. He’s a big fan of the fern and has read what you’ve been saying and wanted to show you he’s actually test standard. Just wait til he bowls, five for coming right up !

Now that is a surprising stat.
I thought Bothams whole legacy was built on his amazing Ashes.
One of my all time favourite players ever but perhaps he is a tad overrated ?
I’d want Foakes playing just so we could have a batting order of Stokes, Foakes and Woakes.

While being too lazy to look up the bowling stats, spells likes of 5/1 at Headingly come to mind. One of those guys who was a world beater when he decided to turn it on. Or not so great late career or after a late night...

Yeah I have a 100 greatest cricketers book and he is in there. I think for the first half of his career he averaged 23 and 38 respectively then 30 odd and 20 odd in the second half.
Like I say, “perhaps” and I absolutely loved watching him.
Also no tons or five fors in ODI which is a huge surprise as you’d think that form of the game was tailor made for him.

Id recommend reading one of Martin Crowe's first autobiographies. He talks about his time at Sommerset in the early - mid 80s when Beefy was there.
Mentioned one time he rolls up to a First Class game hung over without heading home first, eats a couple of mince pies.... win the toss (he was captain) chooses to bat on a green top just so he can have a sleep. Wakes up later goes out to bat, smashes a 100 and then when bowls he tears through the opposition.
Next weekend repeats the aboveCrowe wrote that he couldnt believe how Botham did this week after week but his performances never suffered.

I inherited a load of sports books from the potential future father in law to fill up the shelf. Fairly sure a book from Crowe is one of them, I’ll have a look.
I remember reading another old book going on about how Botham was a fair more talented cricketer than Hadlee ( which wound me up, Paddles was ALWAYS a better bowler than Beefy but anyway ) but it mentioned how Hadlee’s dedication and professionalism outweighed Bothams natural talent. Probably a fair assessment although if I could only have one of that eras all rounders I might have to pick Imran ( Kapil 4th )

Being a real cricket nerd I love shit like this. I’d possibly argue S Waugh, Border, G Chappell…..plus of course Ponting himself. Other excellent batsmen from my time watching but who aren’t in the mix I can think of are Steve’s brother Mark, Hayden, Hussey, Langer, Clarke, Martyn, Jones, Boon, Taylor…..am I missing any ?
Also should it be ‘has’ produced ?

And a grammar nerd
Having met me I’m sure you can confirm what a dumb fluffybunny I am in other aspects of life
But anyway, who have I missed ?

BBC has Leeds as sunny with a high of 26 today https://www.bbc.com/weather/2644688. Good batting conditions so will be interesting to see how Murphy does at Test level outside of Indian pitches.

If it all ended tomorrow...
Steve Smith is still a fucking sandpaper cheating fuckwit who should never be on the green again.
To me purposeful cheats like that should be lifetime bans, like drug cheats and fake blood cheats. The leaders fo those should never, ever be allowed back. Unforgivable

@virgil take note, THIS is how you rant about Australians.

Exciting morning in store. A class player and a guy in good ( batting not keeping ) form at the crease……but fuck all on the board and England being England they’re only a couple of wickets away from an embarrassing collapse. I’ll be watching intently……
…..on the cricinfo match tracker.
