@foobaNZ or is he? ...

@Duluth great signings!! all with the potential for higher honours
-
@BerhamporeNinja are you implying Ardie isn't coming back? Isn't that a done deal?
-
Just a shame we lost Roigard, Proctor, Asafo Aumua
They really are key to us winning. I don't think I can understate how important they are.
Do we have any updates? Proctor at least is back soon?
-
@Darren Proctor will be back next week, Delany and Lomax likely aswell.
Aumua is back running and doing weights so good chance he’ll be back for the quarters.
-
@foobaNZ Ardie is 100% coming back next season.
-
Hopefully Cam Roigard doesn't lose his explosiveness after that injury.
-
@canefan hopefully he can make a full recovery.
-
Hurricanes lock up Higgins, Cameron and Umaga-Jensen until the end of 2026
-
Surprised PUJ extended
-
@Duluth probably because Jordie won’t be there next year. Higgins and PUJ will be fighting for that 12 jersey. I would have been surprised by it if Jordie was there next year but I’m happy PUJ is signing on because depth is key.
I’m hoping Higgins is first choice.
-
So confirmed Canes signings from next year onwards are as follows, I think the big one will be locking up Peter Lakai on a long term contract aswell as locking down the likes of Naholo, Sullivan and Sangster. Other than that I think the Canes are assembling a very strong squad for 2025. The main area of recruitment in the off season will be in the outside backs. Someone like Caleb Tangitau could be a target as he's played plenty of rugby/sevens under Laidlaw and we will need a replacement for Moorby next year.
2025:
Ruben Love
Asafo Aumua
Harry Godfrey
Xavier Numia
Ardie Savea
TK Howden
Billy Proctor
Daniel Sinkinson
Josh Taula
TJ Perenara
Siale Lauaki2026:
Tevita Mafileo
Tyrel Lomax
Brad Shields
Devan Flanders
Pasilio Tosi
Brett Cameron
Riley Higgins
Peter Umaga-Jensen
Isaia Walker-Leawere2027:
Cam Roigard
Brayden Iose
Caleb Delany2028:
Jordie Barrett -

I hope they also find a new backs coach that can see this.
But very pleased that Higgins has signed. Also, Cameron but only because the other options are poor, or not even close to ready yet (Godfrey).
PUJ I've given up on now.
-
@Winger hopefully Morgan departs so Godfrey gets more game time at 10. I think Godfrey will get more time there next year anyway but to not have Morgan in the way will help. I'd be happy with Cameron, Godfrey and then Love as back-up. We would just need to find a solid fullback option to cover Love. Real shame we are losing Moorby, I know Robertson has tried to keep him in NZ but he will be in France next year, he probably left a year or two too early tbh. I wonder if there are any good fullback/wing options off contract this year?

Surely there were some other contracts on the table from other franchises for both players. I guess the comfort of home and the Hurricanes on an upward trajectory really helps and makes players want to hang around so credit to the Canes on that.
What is the contract situation with Rayasi? So much talent but just not getting enough time behind Naholo and Moorby. Possibly looking elsewhere or even off shore?
-
@Landers92 don't think Rayasi will leave, Moorby is leaving so that might push Naholo to the right wing and open a spot for Rayasi on the left. Depends who the Canes sign in the off-season. I'm not the biggest fan of Rayasi, 2/10 times he does something amazing, but the other 8/10 times he gets the ball he usually does something stupid. He hasn't really improved over the last 6 or so years being in the Canes so if he left it wouldn't be the end of the world.
-
@Canes4life yeah just hasn’t taken that next step and was thinking it might be from nit getting consistent minutes. Definitely a player in there somewhere. Interesting one to watch.
A close friend of mine has a very reliable source with your lot. I think it’s a 99.99% lock in that Love makes the All Blacks moving forward but should he not, there are some very interesting contract offers on the table post 2025 for him. I don’t think there is anything to worry about though as he will get AB selected for sure but I thought that was worth mentioning as I found out a few days ago.
-
@Landers92 without detailing too much information were the offers from overseas clubs?
I really can't see him missing out on the ABs for the first squad of the year. Both him and Stevenson should be selected so I think it's likely he'll sign a long term deal with the Canes if he makes the ABs this year and next.
-
@Canes4life overseas yes but not as far overseas as you probably think. Love has to make it, it would be extremely disappointing if he didn’t.
Wearing the black jersey is what will keep him here post 2025, not that that’s uncommon but thats what has been said. Sounds like if that wasn’t a possibility then he wouldn’t be afraid to leave. Thankfully that’s not something we as All Black fans have to worry about haha
-
@Landers92 the hard thing for NZ rugby atm is keeping players that are bubbling just under the ABs. There is so much opportunity for players in their prime now to take the money and run, especially if they don't see the ABs as the be all and end all.
We should be fine because Love is almost a lock for the ABs but there are plenty of other talented players that may look overseas if they miss out, because there will be a few.
-
-
@canefan I wonder if all these players would have re-signed if Holland was still about? Probably not.
-
The Canes are showing what can happen with good coaching and a young motivated coaching group. Jamie Mackintosh is surely an All Blacks forward coach in waiting... can't say I'm not extremely bitter that the Highlanders dropped the ball there.

-
@mikey07 this is amazing news.
I’m not sure if the Canes will need to find a replacement either. With Cameron, Godfrey and Love I think we are covered.
-
@Canes4life not sure I agree with that. We should find an out and out 10.
We should target Jacomb. To me he's the best young prospect and I think is only WTG at the Chiefs?
Or, Rico Simpson from the 20's.
-
@foobaNZ nah we need to back Godfrey to be our long term 10. Him and Roigard ripped the Crusaders apart in a pre season game last year as a halves combo. I’d rather back Godfrey than take a punt on Jacomb who’s aligned with the Chiefs anyway.
Godfrey also was the under 20 player of the tournament playing 10 last year.
-
@Canes4life with Morgan leaving we have a spot for another 10. No reason not to target a good one, even if we have Godfrey and Cameron on the books.
I think Love is pretty well established as a 15 now. He's probably odds on to get the AB 15 jumper this year.

Yeah another experienced 10 wouldn’t be bad to have in the squad.

I was going to say. Why do they feel the need to shoehorn him

thank fvck for that, no more inexplicably shoehorning Godfrey into 15 by the coaches just so the limited Morgan can start at 10...

I don’t like speculating but was having a chat to someone close to the Canes and apparently they are looking to sign Matt Proctor next year as an outside replacement for Josh Moorby. If it ends up being true I wouldn’t mind that at all. He would be a solid player to have on the right side and he’s awesome defensively.
He’s still got plenty of pace and it will be a chance for him to finish his career playing outside his brother.
Apparently it all depends on what happens with the Rebels though as he’s contracted to them until the end of 2025.
-
Thought you'd be better off locking in Stanley Solomon rather than bringing back a 31-year-old centre. I know a needy team down south that is short of some decent outside backs that might be keen to take a punt on a talented outside back like Solomon.

@SouthernMann we’ll have a few open spots in the outsides next year so Solomon will also be on the radar. Signing Proctor isn’t a dumb move, he can play 13,11,14 and 15.

Yeah he's a good player Proctor. Who else a part from Moorby is going. No Punivai, I suspect. What about the U20s 12?
-
@SouthernMann not sure if Punivai will stick around or not.
With Barrett and Morgan not being there next year it will open up a few spots in the backs. I don’t necessarily think we’ll replace Morgan with a 10 or Barrett with a 12 so to speak because I feel like we’ve got those positions covered. That makes the Proctor signing a smart one because he can cover so many positions and he’s quality.
There’s also a few under 20s players coming through like Solomon who we will want to sign. Roderick Solo from the sevens is another guy I’ve heard the Canes are interested in, whether he’ll come back to 15s or not is another question altogether.
