@antipodean Aus don’t have the depth for five teams so if it does happen it’s not the worst news.
Half-pregnant teams are not the answer.

It would be a must happen start. Sadly, Aust don't even have the depth to support 4 teams. I think with 3 teams they could do OK. It would take a few years though
And I would just drop the Rebels if possible. Not merge.

@gt12 Aus having 5 teams isn’t the answer either.
Agreed. I'm not arguing for five teams.

if you blokes are so set on shrinking an already too small competition, why are the Highlanders never on the chopping block?
a record of 9-19 over the past 2 years is hardly high performance. Same number of wins as the Force, and 1 more than the Rebels. And they just lost their best player. -

a record of 9-19 over the past 2 years is hardly high performance. Same number of wins as the Force, and 1 more than the Rebels. And they just lost their best player.Because NZR aren't in the shit. And have enough players to support 5 teams. But the player allocation needs to be improved somehow
If they were (in the shit) and needed to drop one team the Highlanders would be the team to go. Based on population (but also performance)
And it's a small but very flawed competition. In part due to Aussie having too many teams. Without fixing this super rugby will slowly die. Say 5+3+2 still is 10 teams. It is better to have 10 even teams, say, playing two rounds than 12 uneven teams. Get the base right then look at adding more teams.

Putting aside the issue of fewer teams for a competition, if you're going to advocate fewer teams for Aus, then MP needs to be removed.

More likely teams added like a team from Argentina,US team plus there is talk in the media of a SA team based in Perth
the Cheetahs,Pumas or a combined team from both of them.
All speculation but has some traction due to the potential to bring bigger markets in to the comp,TV rights sponsorship, fan base etc.
In the end they will have to grow SR and include more markets to sustain it. -

Not being picky but just checking if these were venues slipped a line?
