Highlanders 2024

@Stargazer he's been squeaky clean and good on him. He's grown immensely in that Petone environment over the last few years and deserves every opportunity to push a case for a Super contract. I'd actually prefer him at the Canes over someone like Rayasi but don't think that would happen.

@frugby why? Filipo is regarded as a better player than Fine, hence why Fine went down to Southland. But if you're going to limit your recruitment to the bottom of the south then that's your doing.
The Canes already have five quality midfielders in Barrett, Higgins, Proctor, Sullivan and potentially Umaga-Jensen, so the next man up isn't necessarily going to be a bad player, we just don't have room for a guy like Filipo, especially when guys like Jack O'Brien are coming through the system who we have hardly seen yet due to his age.
Plus, I think Filipo has grown as a person and a player. Why should a player have to suffer for something he did as a teenager - yet another short cited response from you.
The hard thing for the Highlanders is attracting players down there now that Moana Pasifika are picking up alot of those second string players from the other four kiwi franchises. Filipo might actually be better suited signing with Moana Pasifika now that I think of it.
There is no room at the inn for either Fine or Filipo. Also Fine went to Otago first. Then Southland.

not to mention his patchy off-field history
LOL, the Highlanders had Selby-Rickit in the squad for years straight after he broke someone's jaw and got convicted for it. Besides, as far as I know, history is history. I haven't heard of Filipo causing any more problems since that happened; have you?
Two wrongs don't make a right... also different to actively sign someone with that on their record, as opposed to someone already contracted - and look where MSR ended up. Looking for a cultural reset, I don't think you'd want to go near Filipo - and that isn't to say that he hasn't matured, I'm sure he has, and is probably a nice enough bloke these days, but the optics of it are terrible, particularly for a player who would be reserved for about two games a year.

Signing Fine was a hypothetical joke, we aren't actually looking to get him... but anyway to answer the rest if your claims.
-
Yes the Canes do have good midfielders, but a 24 year-old who has only just cracked it on the wing for Wellington is hardly likely to fit into that category. Remember, we have Jonah Lowe on a three-year deal based off NPC form which he hasn't replicated in Super Rugby.
-
As touched upon, I'm sure Filipo is not still a dickhead, or else this star-studded Wellington team wouldn't go anywhere near it, but when you are looking at a cultural reset, the optics of, "Highlanders sign player who assaulted two people" is hardly any good - even if it is unfair, the optics are the optics.
-
Moana Pasifika have few players the Highlanders would actually have use for. Aumua was one, he went to the Crusaders, Tavatavanawai is the other, and we signed him. If you want to stretch it, there is Pole who'd make a decent backup prop, but the rest of their players are of no use, hence why we destroyed them, despite being destroyed by all the other Kiwi sides.
-
Judging off the Highlanders recruitment so far this year, I don't think the accusation of not being able to attract talent sticks - it has been true in recent years, and looking at MP, there might be a common denominator there, but looking at who they have picked up from outside the region, other than arguably Aumua (though at 29 next month is probably not really what we would want) I'm not sure we could have done much better.
-
-
@frugby you're acting like the Highlanders have so many options on the table. Right now, they have to go to market for two new midfielders by the sounds and there aren't many options left when you think about who's already signed up across other franchises.
The fact you say that Aumua's someone the Highlanders wouldn't want is pretty hilarious. He's one of the most destructive attacking centres in New Zealand rugby right now, the Highlanders would take him in a heart beat. Definitely beats the other options they have available.
Going back to Filipo, he's only playing on the wing because Wellington have too many options there, so to fit him in to the starting side they've had to put him on the wing. Filipo has actually been pretty dominant alongside Higgins all year at Petone in the midfield so he would fit the mould.
Beggers can't be choosers at the end of the day because right now there aren't too many quality options for the Highlanders to go after.
-
Thank you for explaining what we know. We are not blessed for options. Thank you for also trying to push every average player and continuing to drop into the thread to tell us how shit we are. Greatly appreciated.
Losi Filipo may be a changed man. But, from a PR perspective brining him into the squad is not worth his upside. In order to bring in someone with history he would need to be the best rocking around. He is an ok player. If we would be recruiting him as a midfielder, he would need to have form above and beyond Petone Rec. How many games has he started in the midfield for Wellington? What has he done in those games?
Nareki has played centre for Alhambra. Tavatavanawi played a pre-season game at centre. Lowe has also played there. We have wingers who have played in the midfield. Albeit at an unproven level like Filipo.
If we are going to pick up a winger who can play centre, it is much more likely to be Heremaia Murray, who spend time with the Highlanders this season. Of course we did send him home injured, which might cause some trepidation.
I don't know why there is an ongoing conversation around a player that just isn't in the picture as a midfield replacement. It is baffling.
A half-season replacement is likely to be Matt Whaanga. Is he a long-term solution. Probably not. Will he fill a hole similar to what TUJ provides. Probably.

Come on, who doesn't love a little bit of off-season pettiness between teams... they say there is no tribalism in Super Rugby...

@frugby The Chiefs won't be signing any more midfielders with 5 now confirmed. Grindlay played for the Chiefs Dev team, so wouldn't be a bad choice. The other player who was around the Chiefs but would now be surplus is Lalomilo. He doesn't really stand out in the NPC for me though.
Think Lalomilo is one of those guys who has eye-catching moments but is far too inconsistent. Grindlay is a good age, and would be a good prospect worth exploring, who probably has way more upside. As has been pointed out by others, there isn't loads of options around, so we will see.

Jonah Lowe was signed based on a very good season playing for the Chiefs, where he played much better than for the Highlanders. That probably says more about the Highlanders than about the player.

I'd hardly say a very good season for the Chiefs... Lowe is just average. The fact he was starting for the Highlanders, says more about the Highlanders than it does Lowe, but I think the performances themselves are representative of someone who is quite limited. Fine squad option, but not someone you want as a starter.
-
If the Landers thought it was a culture problem, not a player capability problem with Lowe they wouldn't have gone out and signed two starting outside backs...
-
i for one remember being quite happy about sign Lowe, thought he would be a big step up on what we'd had on the right wing since Naholo
i think much like the All Blacks at times, we're just not playing to put a winger in space, nareki often gets the ball either in broken play or under pressure and is expected to break the line rather than build up some momentum and go around/through someone, i put a bit of that at the feet of our 10/midfield
-
no idea how legit these young guys are, is there a chance theyre a Hurley that have the skill but not the body?....but its a god sign we're looking at them, the next generation of players seeing guys go from school teams to Southland/Otago/Highlanders is just going to encourage them
-
I think Jimmy Taylor and the Muliana are only 16 or 17? So, a few years to go.
The halfback out of Kings in the NZ Schools side, looks decent. Same with the Southland winger, who is off on a mission next year.
There are a few good young players. It just might be quite a tough few years.
-
Was just thinking, there has been zero noise around our last two signings. With Millar's injury, I do wonder whether the Landers will consider looking at another 10. Faleafaga has been a little disappointing for Otago IMO, though there are mitigating circumstances there. We have bemoaned Mitch Hunt's punting, but not sure Ajay's is any better.
-
Faleafaga is what 19 or just 20? There is a lot to like about some of his tactical kicking. Especially attacking cross kicks. He is far from the polished finished product. But he has plenty of time on his side. At this stage in his career I'd expect Hunt's punting to be a lot better. Going on a mission is what young Mormons do. Often to the islands or Australia. Although could be to another region doing the door knocking.

My issue with Faleafaga's kicking is range. I just don't think his punt is long enough... doesn't mean he can't be a top player, but I just don't think he'll ever be a top 10, because he'll always struggle to truly control the game with his boot. Look at Canterbury for instance, and see how when things are going array, Burke drives them downfield with a clearing kick into touch up on the 10. Faleafaga's land short of halfway, which isn't bad, but it is those little things.
I'd like to see him transition to 12, as a secondary playmaker. Kind of a smaller version of David Havili.
