I guess the numbers one's will be Spencer, Messam, Cullen, Richie & Aaron Smith.

    So no selection for Jonah....

I think it’s top “contributors “ more than best players.

Doesn't explain Nick Evans selection this one.

Really good player, but surely nowhere near a top 10 for a super side, given he left so early in his career.

I'm as puzzled as anyone. Was trying to work it out.
No Lomu or Cullen for the Canes is madness. JC at 9 I can live with when you have to make calls on order but as much as I am a CJ fan, does he deserve to be there over one of the two best outside backs to ever play the game?

Is it no Lomu or Spencer for Blues?

@MajorRage i loved Nick evans....but he only played for us 30 odd times and generally at low points in our history

i would have said someone like ash dixon, was captain and got over 100 caps...same could be said for coltman...even cowen...a bit weird

can we claim doug howlett too? he was pretty handy, maybe dagg?

I guess it will be Richie McCaw for the Crusaders but, to be honest, he wouldn't be my number one at Super level. Too many seasons under Toddy where I think he paced himself. I would've had Richie the Mo a my number one.

Generally a good set for the Crusaders. I think Chris Jack is unlucky to miss out.

Is it the best player to play for [Insert team] or the player who played the best for [Insert team]

That's where the discussion will divide the room

We asked our writers to do their top 10 based on how players have performed for their Super Rugby club,

I think the number 1 will be: Carlos Spencer- Blues, Liam Messam - Chiefs, Richie McCaw - Crusaders, Aaron Smith - Highlanders, Christian Cullen - Hurricanes.

I think they should be: Zinzan Brooke - Blues, Aaron Cruden - Chiefs, Sam Whitelock - Crusaders, Aaron Smith - Highlanders, Christian Cullen - Hurricanes.

Have to agree. It's the same criteria as to why Messam is a clear number 1 for the Chiefs. Craig Clarke unlucky to miss out on the top 10.

Aussie teams used to say Chris Jack more influential for Saders than Richie.

Still baffles me why Lomu doesn’t appear. I get that he played for 3 franchises but the Vidiri/Lomu combination for the Blues was a big part of their early success.
At the Canes he performed well enough to help fill the caketin week after week.

Lomu has to be the most influential rugby play of all time.
They even made a video game after him.
He needs to fit in somewhere.

The Cullen, Lomu, Umaga back three for the Canes had 30k through the gates every game. Franchises would kill for that now.

@Crucial watching those three t the Tin on almost a weekly basis with the old man will be memories I will cherish forever.

If only we had a good forward pack in those days.

The boy used to beg to go whenever there was a home game.
I remember taking him and his mate one night and the only tickets we could get were at the screen end of the ground. Those only get sold at ABs games now days.

@Crucial yea I don't think we realised how good we had it back then! Even though we were a bit average overall the excitement was through the roof.

I remember having to line up for tickets during the week lol.

I can remember random NPC games against teams like Northland where 20K plus would rock up.

Saw Cullen playing before his breakout HK 7s in 96. I think it was against the Cheetahs; he couldn't be tackled, the swerve at pace was insane. Just a precocious talent that the knee injury robbed. Still one of my favourite players of all time.

Watching him from the Millard stand at Athletic Park; elevated watching, a glorious Wellington day (for a change) - just great fun, rugby as it was.

@foobaNZ even when Northland was in the old 2nd div, we'd get >10k every week, but back then, ABs still played NPC too.

I mean the Northland v Central Vikings (@Nepia ) games had plenty of star power, none less than Cully!

That first year Vikings team was pretty star studded. Although the second year was the better team (when they got rid of most of the Poo riff raff 😉 ). Your Northland teams also had some stars back then too like Norm Berryman and Glen Taylor.

    The top dog

So Nonu and Lomu miss out. Lomu I can sort of understand because he played for 3 teams. Even so I had him in my Canes top 10. Along with Nonu
