The Stalker Series: Revisited

I worked in a butchery department when I was younger, and used to serve Jamie Joseph. He would make special orders for the largest Pork Belly I could find - I'd call our suppliers and get them to do a special delivery. Good times.

Wally Lewis looks remarkably identical to how he did when he was playing, ie he looked like ya mates Dad in his late 20s, 30 or so years later he's grown into his age just like Scots Rugby legends John Jeffrey and Finlay Calder and trundling English forwards Jeff Probyn and Paul Rendall.

Most ABs tend to speak favourably about their ex teammates or not speak of them at all. Not Norm Hewitt though, his description of him as a "Grade A Prick" in his book made me chortle. Josh Kronfeld mentioned that he was hurt Brewer told him to "shut the fuck up" during a team talk in his book too.

No wonder you didn't talk to him Smudge.....
-

I'm not the type of bloke to wander up to former footy players and say "hey, you're [nsert name from the 70s, 80s, or 90s]'' but even as I considered the remote possibility of doing so, his reputation as a fluffybunny among men did cross my mind and ensured that remote possibility disappeared pretty quickly.
-

A mate of mine was in the Koru lounge at 7 in the morning some years ago and tells me how he saw and overheard one bloke accost Murray Mexted to talk at great length about the new laws and every single thing that was wrong with todays game. Kinda like a talkback caller you can't hang up on. Murrays pained expression was apparently quite priceless and the flight being delayed only made the process longer.....cos I'm sure there's nothing on earth that Muzza would rather do at 7 in the morning......

I think given the amount of big islanders playing nowadays it's hard to look at guys like that from yesteryear and see them thriving in todays game so helps the anonymity to younger fans. Ben Smith and Beauden Barrett still fly the flag for the skinny white guys though.....
-
Walking up the street one day in Petone and see Rodney So'oialo digging up a yard. Only problem being he's the spitting image of my mate Tagi. So of course I start shouting "Tagi" at him. Oddly he just mad dogs at the guy shouting an odd name at an All Black. I realise my mistake, say sorry and continue walking.

Fuck I was at a thing at tattersalls in Brisbane a couple of weeks back and heard Brad Thorn speaking, and had a bit of a chat after,(doesn't sound the sharpest knife in the drawer I thought) shit if I'd known this thread was going to start.......

And a couple of times I've seen Alfie Langer pissing abg garening etc by his restaurant up Caloundra way, but I don't really like league so no good getting pic with him!
-

Yes I do recall being a bit shocked the first time I heard him interviewed.....not Mike Tyson shocked, but still shocked.
-

I may have relayed this story on The Fern before (possibly via a former username before The Purge)…

I was working in Martin Place of Sydney and was sitting in the Pitt St food court enjoying some lunch with the then missus.

A big, brown bloke walked passed and I knew him from somewhere but couldn’t quite put my finger on it (it was George Pisi).

I finished my lunch and was walking back to the office when I froze in my tracks as I walked passed a table. Sitting there were Keven Mealamu, Joe Rokocoko, Isaiah Toeava and George Pisi. I was a bit of a fanboy at the time and the missus knew it (the hyperventilating may have given it away) so she suggested I go to the nearby newsagency and buy some stuff to get their autographs.

I purchased the stationery, sheepishly approached the table and asked for a photo. They kindly obliged but I should mention that Pitt St mall food court gets very busy, especially around lunch time. As we stood for the photo quite a few heads turned. As we were posing I could hear some mumbling:

“…everyone is staring at us, everyone is staring at us, everyone is staring at us…â€

I turn to my right to see Joe Rokocoko wiggin the fark out! And I thought I was nervous…

We return to the table and I asked for their autographs. The younger Polynesian guys were still a bit rattled from the whole thing so Keven took charge of the situation. He asked me where I work, did I enjoy it, which team I supported, was I coming to the game etc…I’ve always had a lot of respect for him since then and it does not surprise me at all that he was a bit of a figurehead for the younger guys in the team.

I dug through an old email account and found the photo but wouldn’t have a clue how to load it up.

Another time a mate told me how he and a few mates bumped into Sione Lauaki and another player late one night in France.

“Hey Sione, how ‘bout an arm wrestle?â€

“Not with those water pistols, broâ€

And he kept walking.
