This Australian side right now looks easily the best in the world.
Haven't you heard? - England are reinventing cricket
Best side ever, anywhere, any time - in the history of the game.
Nobody said that.
Some of the English media have said exactly that.

GQ?
Please.
Anyway, the point was that nobody is saying they are the best ever, or saying they will win the ashes.

Unfasthionable opinion. David Warner is one of the great batsmen of the last 20 years and never gets the credit he deserves. To score a double ton on his 100th Test at the MCG will have been a sweet moment for him after coping a lot of shit in his career.
averages 60 in Aus, South Africa and Bangladesh
Averages 26 in England, 24 in India, 26 in the Windies, 25 in Sri Lanka and 13 in NZ. Has never scored a 100 in any of those countries
That does not say "great" to me.
Yeah but of his era who is a great opener?
I agree home and away averages of 59 and 34 don’t look too good but a lot of players do plunder runs/wickets at home…..
Even our boy KW is 65/43. Struggles in the subcontinent according to Indian cricket fans

Well if you not going to get caught out, let's take a trot between wickets and get run out. I get impression there not a lot of interest from SAs! Some of their body language in field was shocking yesterday,
304 runs to get with six wickets in hand just to make Oz bat again.
I kinda think you’re right. A combination of a motivated, brilliant team vs a disinterested, limited team only produces what we see unfolding here.
Getting run out in a test match is pretty unforgivable
They’ll lose by an innings and 220 odd I reckon.

Yeah but of his era who is a great opener?
no one
Alistair Cook is the only one of his time who is even close.
It's been a very poor decade for test match openers.
a quick look at the box score and i may have been a bit harsh on him. His numbers alone are right up there. To play a hundred tests as an opener and average nearly 47 is actually really good. Not all-time, even for Aus, but it's a hell of a career.
Also, we give Tom Latham a bit too much shit. The number of guys to play 50+ tests as an opener and average over 40 is not that high, and he's well inside both of those parameters
Anyway this shit summer of cricket continues and if the rest of the world aren't careful the boxing day and news years tests will only be England and India soon.

If not all time it’s pretty damn close……and as we both point out there’s fuck all genuinely brilliant openers strutting their stuff today.
On paper it’s a better record than Justin Langers. Better than Tubby and Slats too, who were both very good players. Not quite up there with Matt Hayden, but he was superb.
Interesting having a look at Sunil Gavaskars record ( overall average of 51, incredible for an opener facing loads of Windies bowlers in their peak )
He averaged 50 at home, 52 away. He has to be in the discussions for GOAT. As you say, over 40 as an opener and the extremely unlikelihood of lots of not outs is a hell of an effort.
In other news this test is boring, Australia are ridiculous at the moment. Untouchable at home.

From here the game plan for South Africa would be to bat positively and be around 300 at stumps. Then one and a half big sessions tomorrow morning to put on 200-250 and a sporting declaration with 1.5 sessions left on day 5. I'm not sure if the pitch will break up enough for SA bowlers to force victory.
-
@Damo said in Australia v South Africa:
That wicket hurts. It's difficult to see SA being in a position to set a challenging total from here.
solid comedy
i was onboard with your plan, though i assumed they also needed to channel the spirits of AB deVilliers and Herchelle Gibbes
And then Dale Steyn, Shaun Pollock and Alan Donald to take the wickets.
Doable, but unlikely

Because I have to coach with him for 10 days of the year at the High performance centre at Albion.
And he gets pissed afterwards and makes a dick of himself.
Most people involved with Cricket here in QLD will say the same thing he is right up there with Michael Clarke as a major knob. -

Oh well, next time you see him tell him I was in awe of his timing and power when I saw him batting up close in the nets at the Basin in 07. Amazing stuff.
Tell him that’s from MN5, if he reads the fern he’ll know who I am.

Ok I will tell him that don't think he reads the Fern if he does he will not be happy with me for calling him a knob, but I am safe, due to see him in January for a Australian u/19 High performance batting and fielding clinic.
I could tell you many stories about M Clarke.

Appalling runout there. That's Inzamam level stuff.
Bavuma in runout shock.... not.
Guy is fucking awful. Turned blind and then left his partner stranded.
The earlier runout was also terrible stuff.
They look like a lazy, disinterested, leaderless bunch. I expected more, but will take thrashing them as compensation.
