Well deserved win for Argentina. France looked off all game.
They deserved to win because they got more penalties in the shoot out. What happened in the previous 120 minutes didn’t really matter because it was a 3-3 at the end of it.
It’s not like you take momentum into a penalty shoot out. It’s a whole new ball game.

Superb tournament in the end.
They aren’t without issue but they way Qatar completely ignored all the virtue signaling bullshit and dealt harshly with the actual activists is a lesson to us all.
Are you serious? Not without issue? The human rights issues in Qatar are extremely serious and calling them out on that is absolutely not virtue signaling. Absolutely insane they placed a WC there.
Read it again and this time have a think without flying off the handle.
The "without issue" part felt like you were playing down their atrocious human rights abuses a bit. I'll admit I don't have the context of your comment about shutting down the virtue signalers though, as I really haven't followed this WC at all. I think holding the tournament there summed up everything that is wrong with the world today. To hell with human rights if there's money involved - that applies to western countries too.

They were banking on the fact that once the games started, people would forget the surrounding context.
Seems to have worked right now (that’s not a comment on MR’s post, but what I’m seeing in the media).
The Messi championship might push back the horrible parts for a while too.

Hate penalty shootouts. Should play the game like hockey. Play until there is a winner.
ice hockey? that goes to a shootout after OT

To be fair that’s not really the fern way.

Not in the playoffs. They keep playing until a goal is scored. Regular season 5 minute 3 v3 then shoot out if no goal.
-
@Kiwiwomble FYI The most recent extended playoff OT was 5 in 2020, Tampa Bay vs Columbus, which is 160 minutes of Hockey.
-
Football used to have golden goal, but that wasn't popular, and still went to pens if neither team scored.
Some playoff games could potentially go on forever if there weren't pens (although I guess not knowing that pens are coming changes the dynamic).
Penalty shootouts seem to be in that category of ideas every agrees is terrible but no one can come up with anything better.
What about if after ET the side that had the most
boundariesshots on target wins? -

To be honest, I originally wrote that without the first 5 words but then changed it as I didn't want to make trivial of the actual issues there are. That wasn't the point of the post.
The point was the way they dealt with them which I thought was spot on. It seems the opposite is applied to activists these days and it drives me nuts. I generally believe in most activists, but I don't believe they should be exempt from the rule of law.
I'm a bit different to most on my views with Qatar. They have their ways of running it based on their own thoughts and I respect that. And is it "The Wests" right to say their way is wrong? Not sure. Reality is though, that if we, or activists believe that to be the case, then the issue should be with FIFA, not so much Qatar. Which means we aren't far off aligned on our view here.

No mention on here of the 'France was robbed' missed call on the Argies having their subs on the pitch when a goal was scored (changeover not done properly).
It had no material effect as they were just over-excited thinking a goal had been scored just before it was. Overall too much laxity in allowing subs to run on the field to celebrate goals etc, and not booking anyone who runs on for any reason.

I really don't know how it works but articles I read say that there isn't latitude for materiality, hence the complaint.
In fact I saw the opposite quoted which was that if extra players are on the field for whatever reason when a goal is scored then the goal gets scrubbed. If that is the case (and it seems very heavy handed to me) then I can see why French fans would be annoyed. -
@Crucial The French fans could be annoyed but they'd be hypocrites. Same as they might moan about the Agie keepers shithousery but would be delighted if Lloris had done it.
I haven't really seen much sour grapes from the French. They were outplayed for 80 minutes, came back into it and then were relatively lethargic in extra time - until the mad end.
I don't get all the 'its the greatest final ever" talk.
France were awful. Argentina did what they had to then sat back. France got a goal, suddenly thought we've been outplayed here but shit we could still nick it, got the equaliser and then went back to sleep. I wonder how much the virus took out of them? It was an OK game but not fantastic.
Argies just about deserved to win, but aren't a great side. France however are building some depth and quality. Even with Benzema's retirement

I was thinking the same. Once Messi goes this Argentinean team looks average. They are workmanlike but don't have the quality in certain areas of the pitch to have sustained success. Relying on Lautaro Martínez to score you goals wouldn't fill me with confidence.
-
fuck yes, current Copa America and World Cup champions, average as fuck
this forum, seriously...
