    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/provincial/300763956/manawat-turbos-coach-appointment-imminent

Manawatū advertised for a new coach at the end of the season, receiving 26 applicants, which was cut to five people who were interviewed, and then a final three candidates.

The last three were going to be interviewed again at Hurricanes headquarters in Wellington on Wednesday. He would not say whether incumbent coach Peter Russell was among the final candidates or who the others were.

The union has in recent weeks announced the signings of some of its best young talent in prop Feleti Sae-Ta'ufo'ou, utility back Waqa Nalaga, flanker Elyjah Crosswell, hooker Raymond Tuputupu, first-five Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula, halfback Jordi Viljoen, centre Kyle Brown and prop Darius Mafile'o.

All are young but have potential and it keeps them in Manawatū.

Former Bay of Plenty assistant Mike Rogers has been appointed as the new coach of the Manawatū Turbos.

Rogers, 43, will take over from Peter Russell, who had the job for four years, but his contract finished at the end of last season.

Rogers will not arrive in the region until July after the Major League Rugby season in the United States, where he has to complete his contract as an assistant coach of the New England Free Jacks.

Former All Black and Manawatū outside back Nehe Milner-Skudder has been appointed as an interim coach to provide local coaching for the union’s high-performance players until Rogers arrives.

@Bovidae it seems like Peter Russell was let go. As opposed to stepping aside

@Winger Neither article said whether Russell reapplied or interviewed again. He didn't have much support, which is why Plumtree ended up helping him out.

@Bovidae yep he was tuck with no money for enough players (only about 25-6 players or something stupid) and no assistants.
It was like when Pat Lam coached Blues in super.

The Heartland Ranfurly Shield Challenges have been announced and there are no surprises:

Wellington Rugby Football Union has today confirmed Horowhenua-Kapiti and South Canterbury as the two Bunnings Warehouse Heartland Championship Unions to challenge for the Ranfurly Shield during the provincial pre-season.

As Meads Cup Champions in 2022, South Canterbury automatically earned themselves a challenge for a second consecutive year, while Wellington’s provincial neighbours Horowhenua-Kapiti, were selected as the other challenger.

Horowhenua-Kapiti will get the first chance to challenge for the Shield on Wednesday, July 12th at the Levin Domain.

If the Lions are successful in defending the Shield against Horowhenua-Kapiti, Meads Cup Champions South Canterbury will make the trip to Wellington for a challenge the following Wednesday (July 19th).

More details, including kick-off times and ticketing information, will be announced by Wellington Rugby in the coming months.

A shame as they will struggle to draw a crowd in Levin on a Wednesday.

@Canes4life Yeah, for the Wellington game it makes sense, because the women's Football World Cup starts that weekend, but Levin? Why not on a Friday night, or better, a Saturday or Sunday afternoon?

Edit: it will be interesting to see which field in Wellington will be the venue. Sky Stadium and Jerry Collins Stadium not available, I think. Maybe that fancy new venue in Upper Hutt?

Yeah or they might put in temp stands in at Hutt Rec which they’ve done in the past. The problem with their training base is that it doesn’t offer much room for a crowd.

Plenty of bored retirees in Levin. A wednesdsy could be a rip snorter. I'd also be huge on a game at Hutt Rec. 20 minute walk from home. How good!

@taniwharugby Unfortunately for the Northland Taniwha impressive Fijian winger Solomone Naiduku who looked extra good running around for the Hurricanes in preseason super rugby has declined what was a very good offer to move north for the 2023 Bunnings NPC
Naiduku who had limited minutes for the Paramata NRL top side in 2022 is currently part of the Hurricanes wider training squad has decided throw in his lot with Counties Manukau for the upcoming NPC season ..Bugger ..!
