@Stargazer Perhaps I should have rephrased it to be something more like the IRB not exactly jumping for joy at the qualification of tiny, economically weak nations.

The bottom of the men's table is interesting, too, because the number of core nations will be reduced to 12 (same number as the women).

The team at the bottom will be automatically relegated, while the numbers 12 - 14 will play a mini-tournament in London - that also includes the winner of the WR Sevens Challenger Series - and only the winner of that mini-tournament will joirn the core nations in 2024.

@KiwiMurph more importantly I want to know what happened to 15th place ...

@booboo So winning the previous event gets you the draw from hell, while pool D is rather weak. Luck of the draw??

Is that really the pool from hell?

Sevens can be fickle and one error can land you out of the quarters which upsets the next tourny's pools. It is accepted as part of the game.

One match v invitation team, plus two against teams that could beat us means that we won't be able to spread the match time around the squad as much as in recent events. There are nine top tier teams nowadays, with GB a bit off the pace. We have 3 in our pool, the others 2. You don't really want to play a pool winner in the quarter-finals. Yep, I think easily the toughest pool - and against two of the most physical teams.

    The AB7s squad for the LA Sevens (25 - 26 February 2023)

    alt text

Unavailable for selection: Andrew Knewstubb, Kitiona Vai, Regan Ware, Sione Molia, Tim Mikkelson, Tone Ng Shiu (injury).

The squad named for the USA and Canada rounds, will see the return of Moses Leo and hopeful All Blacks Sevens debutant Fehi Fineanganofo in the only two changes to the team, who successfully lifted the HSBC Sydney Sevens trophy at the end of January.

    It's Dylan Collier's 50th tournament.

Was Fehi Fineanganofo part of the wider sevens squad? He's ex-AGS, a centre, and would only be 19/20.

I vaguely recall him being in team lists for the World Schools Sevens in the tournament before the most recent one.

I was referring to the AB sevens squad. The team list on allblacks.com is not current so it's hard to know who is in the training group at Mt Maunganui.

I don't think that NZR comms team (and the SR ones also) really understand that there is a demand for knowledge and stats about squads etc. Most player profile sections on sites are used to load the obligatory photo shoots then the profiles are very patchy.
Hopefully the Silverlake partnership really improves this to more of a US sporting standard.

What's the hold up asks he who does not have a Sky connection? The Great Britian v Spain match seems to have been stuck on GB 19 - 17 Spain with 13minutes 5 seconds played for over half an hour now.
