@Chris Dmac kicked well from hand in Npc landing ball in gaps regularly. Perhaps it was a work on for him.
DMac has good vision on kicking from hand. His problem is sometimes execution, not the decision on where/when to kick.
You rarely see him put up an aimless bomb and he spots out of position players very quickly. -
Seemed a bit dopey for Coles to start when he had a dodgy calf. Nek Minnit succumbs to dodgy calf in the warm up and is out for the tour.
I wonder if they call in someone for Cane. Harmon would be my pick
-
So SW is out, SC now out, BBBR out, DC out, Ardie for captain? BB?

Coles and Cane gone to injury.
This will be another one of those times where the medical room makes the selections Foster should have made in the first place.
Papalii and Aumua to be "discovered" over the coming weeks.

@Joans-Town-Jones SW as in Sam Whitelock? He isn't out. He's joined the squad, this week.

I thought he was still home. So SW over Ardie?

From the link @taniwharugby posted, for people who can't be bothered to click on the link:
The All Blacks coach said Cane had suffered a fractured cheekbone in the match at National Stadium, while veteran hooker Coles has succumbed to a calf injury which had seen him a late scratching from Saturday’s test.
Canterbury and Highlanders loose forward Billy Harmon, and Wellington, Hurricanes, and six-test hooker Asafo Aumua – both of whom were part of the All Blacks XV squad – have been called up for the remaining tests against Wales, Scotland and England.
Foster also confirmed lock Patrick Tuipulotu and playmaker Damian McKenzie would rejoin the ABs XV squad, while winger Mark Telea – a late call-up after Leicester Fainga’anuku went home for family reasons – would stay on with the All Blacks as Will Jordan will stay on in New Zealand to get over his inner ear issue. -

At this stage with this team, I'm just happy they won! forget scorelines and aiming to achieve the perfect performance, if we only win by 1 but keep doing it I'm cheering. The global game and this team is what it is. Next week without being negative I feel we almost even money going in, learn to grind out a win. I'm sick of personally complaining about the same issues so just going accept the facts and support haha!

This is essentially good news. We need Papalii, Aumua and a few others to get used to playing big tests in the likes of Twickenham and Cardiff.
Flogging Australia every year is no barometer of where a team is at anymore.

With Will Jordan still out , I fear we will lose Jordie from the 12 shirt, and he is exactly what we need up north on attack and defence.

Play BB at 15 and bring Reece in for WJ

Reece had a couple of very ordinary moments last night but I love what he brings. And in the absence of a running 9 or 10 he's the only real threat we have around the ruck

Pretty much as good a combo as we can field.

He basically does what we want from Aaron Smith from time to time.

I forgot, who was the victim of the tip tackle in last night's match? And who was the Japanese player, who arguably deserved a red card? It will be interesting to see if he gets cited; I think he should be.

There was also a shoulder to head clean out on one of our props about 5 mins before BBBRs. Wasn't looked at .
Being a ref is a thankless task
-
@Stargazer it was Papalii I think (was a tip cleanout if that was the one you were thinking of).
-
@KiwiMurph yeah, it was Papalii. He looked pretty angry afterwards.

Have you got a time for that, or Dalts tip, anyone?

Smith, Mo'unga, Reece, BBarrett - pretty small ball backline!

Especially if our 9 and 10 just distribute. We'll get picked off.

@mariner4life why would they change tactics now?

Put a small midfield in there and they will run straight through us

Even DMac was shaking his head at the brainless kicking at times.
He of all people should understand it he has done enough of it himself.
As BB was doing it all season JB from FB as well it looks like a team tactic for some bizarre reason. You should only kick the ball in general play for a set purpose. That means that if you are unlikely to achieve that purpose, don't kick it! If the opposition are well positioned at the back you won't find space. If the opposition have more likelihood of collecting a high ball than you do, don't kick it!
No argument with that,But we are seeing it from everyone in this Ab set up who tactically kick.
Mounga,Jordie Barrett,Beauden Barrett its either a team tactic kicking straight to a player and not into space as they are all doing it.
Or it's a disease associated with this squad. -

well Foster was a First Five and his main strength was kicking when he played I suppose he is it.

I don't know. Since Mick Byrne left I think that there has been occasional use of Andrew Strawbridge but I dont think there is anyone doing long term work.

Two GOATs were there!
They should have been selected

@Nevorian well one of them has recently been in SA teaching skills; why NZR isnt looking to utilise his (well both actually) skills is beyond me.
Maybe Foster thinks they are too close to the game in terms of recently retired, although given they are still using the pretty much the same structures and principals from when those 2 last played....
McLeod must be proud of his defence, our last 2 outings v Japan have conceded >60 points...guess you could argue its our attack that has fallen away since the last visit to Japan, the defence is consistent...
-
DC did some kicking work with the BFs a few weeks back. Don’t know where he finds the time in between his visits to the Chemist Warehouse.
-
@Crucial I do wonder if they need a size 4.5 ball for womens rugby, slightly lighter and smaller than the mens size 5, but not as small as the ones they use for some kids grades
-
I quite liked the Japanese tv coverage. No in-game replays except of the tries. So, no froth getting whipped over every refereeing call.
Was, in fact, almost an enjoyable watch.
-
That was the first full game I gave watched for 2 years, got a sky subs going again for the cricket.
I do enjoy watching Japan. Although, normally I enjoy watching them against anyone other than nz as their high tempo game usually played right into our hands . Not anymore?
