The Bay v Northland

One of the commentators mentioned earlier that the first round of play-off games is in-conference. i.e. whomever finishes 4th in our conference has to play Canterbury. If we can't beat Hawkes Bay we might as well let Northland have the fun of going to ChCh!
Auckland needs to beat Taranaki or could be overtaken in 3rd.
I presume that's right. Seems a bit odd - is there some logic I'm missing or just the whim of NZ Rugby?
The latter. I had mentioned this in the NPC thread.
This result also helps Wellington, so Waikato and BOP are playing for a home QF, and will likely play each other the following week too.
-
what other way should it be?
-
I have to say as a neutral, I really enjoyed that game! Mind you I will say again I love this comp, and we keep getting games like this. You know things mightn't always be very high level, but they are good and generally bloody well played.
Good om the Taniwha! -
@mariner4life In most competitions I've watched the logic is 1 plays 4, 2 plays 3 etc across conferences. I.e. In the current table it would be Wellington vs Ta$man, Canterbury vs Otago etc.
That way you likely get some opponents that haven't previously met - and help guard against the distortion of one strong conference, one weak one.
But, NZ Rugby has notoriously fucked up logic in almost all its competitions.

it should be inside your conference until GF time, otherwise what is the point of the conferences?

Really?
Where were you when we had those heavily slanted national Super rugby conferences?
Since the conferences are just odds and evens from last year, I presume they'll get juggled next year, so there is (and will be) zero history like NFL.
And to compound things - I gather they switch to cross conference for the semis anywayl
-
@mariner4life As far as I can see, the only point of the conferences is to avoid playing a full round robin.

trying to explain how conferences work to bitter kiwis
the dumbest thing is having 8 of 14 teams make finals. should be 6.
i am pretty sure the only reason you are making a thing out of this is because you would prefer the South Central Vikings to not have to Chch in week 1. So transparent

cut Southland and Manawatu (no one would miss them but their half a dozen fans) and play a round robin
-
@mariner4life No, no, no.
I make a thing out of it because the fluffybunny who organized competitions for NZ Rugby was so sleepy that for 10 years he didn't understand that the competition structure was enabling some teams to dodge giving Ta$man a Shield challenge.
And because the Super competition structure was fucking hopeless and unfair.
And because Andy Marinos is on the news tonight claiming that revenue structures are unfair. Andy didn't seem to comprehend the definition or practice of unfair back in the Super days, so I'm paying him no mind!
