@mariner4life In most competitions I've watched the logic is 1 plays 4, 2 plays 3 etc across conferences. I.e. In the current table it would be Wellington vs Ta$man, Canterbury vs Otago etc.
That way you likely get some opponents that haven't previously met - and help guard against the distortion of one strong conference, one weak one.
But, NZ Rugby has notoriously fucked up logic in almost all its competitions.
it should be inside your conference until GF time, otherwise what is the point of the conferences?
Really?
Where were you when we had those heavily slanted national Super rugby conferences?
Since the conferences are just odds and evens from last year, I presume they'll get juggled next year, so there is (and will be) zero history like NFL.
And to compound things - I gather they switch to cross conference for the semis anywayl
I have absolutely no problems with the conferences , perhaps agree with Mariner only 6 needed on finals, but all in all I think it works, generally as in most comps, the best teams win anyway. I always thought even the old super system, though a bit unfair on who had home finals etc, still ended up with best team winning anyway, and that's the point of a comp in my opinion.

I have seen the first 60 minutes of this game so far and for the first time I watched Reihana. I thought he showed he has the tools to be a pretty handy 10. He is solidly built, seems to have time on the ball, has one of the bigger kicks on him, has a passing game, and seems to a have a running game too. A bit of a worry seeing his left knee strapped, hopefully it's nothing chronic.
Would like to see him get some opportunities next year at Super level to see what he can do the next level up.

@Duluth Just watched the replay. at the ground it looked like Matich lost the ball short of the goal-line. Could not understand why they did not show any relevant angles on the replay. But, we were worried it would be deemed a penalty try and yellow card - even though the tackler had little choice on how it ended up. So, I think it was a bad call, but a fair result.

@Crazy-Horse I think the biggest thing for him this year is consistent game time at 10, previously for us he has been chopped and changed between 10 and 15 and the bench.
-
@Dan54 I don't have any great problem with these conferences - just seems a bit odd that the quarters are played in conference, but the semis are not. It's not logical.
History shows that home advantage is massive in Super rugby. Slanted conferences gave a big advantage to - basically, the strongest Australian team.

Yeah it seems like he I have more memory of him at 15 even though he was generally a 10 through the age groups wasn't he?

@mariner4life As far as I can see, the only point of the conferences is to avoid playing a full round robin.
cut Southland and Manawatu (no one would miss them but their half a dozen fans) and play a round robin
Hang on, at least they have floodlit grounds that can be used. Surely the best option is to ditch those teams unable to provide an adequate floodlit ground fit for television purposes?
-
@Crazy-Horse yeah, I think he had some minutes for the chiefs at FB too, but I do think 10 is where he should be.
He's only 22, so still time on his side to develop.

I'll have to remember that when I am next sitting on the bank, the only quarter of the ground that has any uncovered seating at all!

just don't go at the wrong time of day or they have to pause the game.
or on a day when the surface is too shit to play on.

To think though the Bay just needed to hold firm in that one scrum and couldn't do it.
Some of the funniest reactions though to getting that scrum penalty at the end from Northland lol
