In the same way that most kids that play against a good netballer and also their parents would be "in the know" Hey, they might even make a local rag

Well, I'd heard of him here in Japan...

- from reading the New Zealand newspapers that everyone here hates :)

And

- watching Smithy's videos (I think) about future 'stars' of NZ rugby (there once was a thread?)

Anyway, I think he was talked about enough as being a potential future star.

I'm a Cantabrian living Auckland and heard plenty of him. I enjoy watching College Rugby so was impossible to miss him a few seasons back.

Certainly made a bit of news when he was signed by the Storm. Not so much that rugby was losing a certain All Black to the enemy but he was used more of an example that some of the nation's brightest rugby talent was being lured to Australia and there was little that the wider rugby community could do to stop this happening to many more players of similar ilk.

Looking forward to seeing him come back. One of the pleasures for those who follow college rugby is seeing over time if the stars of school can deliver on their promise.
-
Yep I heard about him from over here in Aus, maybe on NZ stuff, can't remember where, nut am sure I saw a few articles with his name in, may also of been in Rugby News, which I used to get. General feeling was if I recall he was a pretty good player that decided to go to League because he got make a living out of it at early age, and indicated was a good introduction to professional sport, and would probably return. So I certainly heard something about him.

Was that the one on Lambton Quay? Almost across the road from the Occidental?

Or was it the one across the road from that mexican place where sandwiches used to be?

I've heard of him too and I'm in the US. Teh Fern talked about him a couple of years ago. His story definitely went global.

Too lazy to find the appropriate thread but watched Waikato club rugby and think Sevu Reece, 13/wing, is going to be a real star.

I saw plenty of Reece playing for HBHS, and I agree. He started out on the wing in the early games but moved into the midfield and excelled. He played well for the NZ Schools last year too. He'll be on Tietjens radar soon.

Melville has quite a few ex-HBHS players through the Nigel Hotham connection.
-
^^ what is that Japaese tournament the video coverage is from?

The Sannix World Rugby Youth tournament. It's an annual tournament held in Japan consisting of 8 Japanese school teams and 8 international school teams nominated by their rugby union. The NZ representative has been the national champion from the previous year but not all teams that attend are the best in their country (e.g. South Africa). The NZ teams have generally done well and won the majority of Sannix tourneys in recent years. One point to note is that the team may look quite different from the national champion team due to school leavers and age restrictions.
