I have been wagering on the ponies since 1973. Almost fifty years. And yesterday was the most enraged I’ve ever been. I started to write a post above, but figured I should calm down and sleep on it first. I’m still pissed. I had Godolphin’s MODERN GAMES (t. Charlie Appleby; j. Frankie D) alive in a pair of quaddies, singled in one of them. To watch him stroll home so far in front to win had me spitting nails incensed, but was music to my ears to hear him getting shouted down with boos. Not for the horse’s sake, but the governing body. This was an especially bad farce b/c it wasn’t any ol’ race at a country track, this was a million-dollar G1 championship.
Breeders' Cup: Horseplayers up in arms over Juvenile Turf scratch snafu
The Friday running of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar has left bettors once again infuriated by the racing industry’s procedures and protocols, with social media abuzz with claims from longtime horseplayers that their confidence and enthusiasm for the sport has been irretrievably shaken.

How it started:
How it ended:
The Official “quick ‘n dirty assessment” of what happened, notably absent is any concern for bettors:

Ouch, almost everything I won on VE I’m flushing away at todays’ Breeders Cup. Japanese horses are killing me. The Classic goes in just over an hour. Will likely settle American Horse of the Year honours. I’ve got 5. KNICKS GO on top. Playing a 20-cent superfecta 5/3,4,9/1,3,4,6,8,9/ALL ($15 total).

Very nice win for Polly Grey at Rosehill, won ATC Cup with J-Mac aboard. I didn’t take the bet though, was 1/5 with three minutes to post. Drifted to $3 by racetime, I should have put a few on.

Was an easy watch in the end.
JMac had her so relaxed her ears were flopping along the back straight. Never seen her like that before. Once she got to the 1000m he switched her on to win mode.
4th Black type win for her over there.
We love Pol Pol.
We sure do.
$11 early boosted but 17% deductions. All on the nose too. Happy days and congrats again Rob. She's some horse.

By chance my old man was talking about your mare, as he loves any horse that goes back to the Tetrarch (which is pretty much any grey horse running around) and has been following her for a while.
Great win!

That's really cool. She has got a small following that look forward to seeing her race.
Apparently it may be a wet December in Sydney so Chris Waller has a couple of really nice races lined up for her.

Nice run along the rail to claim third at Randwick on Boxing Day. Included her in the quaddie, but shied away from taking a big plunge bc of the firm sod, however she handled it surprisingly well.

Who handicaps these things?!! First race at Gosford just now, the 3 horse opens morning-line at 90-1, posttime is 4/5 and does what a 4/5 fave is supposed to do, win easily. See this every week and can’t believe a Gai Waterhouse maiden should ever open at 90 to one. Ridiculous!
-
Should not come as a surprise but still nice to see Sydney Morning Herald (behind a paywall) year-end honours and their horsie columnists are unanimous, their horse of the year VE, jock of the year J-Mac, trainer of the year CW, and Moment of the Year the 2021 Melbourne Cup. That is a kiwi clean sweep and sweet-as.
-
Another play I regularly make is a win bet on any kiwibred trained by nz-great John Sargent. He has a small stable at Randwick but a pretty good strike rate 14% and I bet a lot higher with his kiwibreds. Yesterday put $10 to win on Pink Ivory (NZ) at Gosford maiden, a second start, MLO was 40-1, I got him on the tote at 23-1 and paid $245. I had him in the 2nd leg of the quaddie too, and while I claimed two other legs, i missed the winner of the 3rd leg the feature race another 23-1 shot. 20-cent quaddie paid $4.4K. Sure would have liked to get a piece of that one.

The Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings for 2021 were announced last night, and Verry Elleegant named world’s best mare, by some daylight. Congrats to all her connections!

@hooroo thanks mate. Thrill to be there (actually the first time I've been on course when a horse of mine has won). Slightly dusty today but well worth it.
Congratulations!!!
Now, what won and where?
Need You Now at the Harness Jewels yesterday.
And now she's a Group 2 winner! Entertaining race to watch (helped by the fact our horse won), and rectifies a curiosity in her record where she was a Group 1 winner but hadn't won any other Group or Listed races. She's now won 9 from 35, with 15 minor placings as well.

Remarkable or insane? I’ll be watching.
Cummings contender runs twice in 24 hours
THE Anthony Cummings-trained Secretively will take the term ‘quick back up’ to a whole new level when he contests the final event at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday afternoon.
That’s because the five-year-old gelding heads into the race fresh off a third placed finish in the last race at Canterbury Park on Friday night when beaten just under two lengths by the Gary Moore-trained Bergen.
Secretively’s Rosehill assignment on Saturday gets underway at 6.00pm while he contested the final event at Canterbury on Friday night at 9.30pm, meaning a mere 20 hours separates the in-form galloper’s two runs.
“It’s something I did a lot of with good success back in the day,” trainer Anthony Cummings said.
“He went over a few jumps this morning at home and is as bright as a daisy so there was no reason not to back him up. He’s a horse that really thrives on work and I wouldn’t back him up if I didn’t think he will be competitive.
“The way the race played out on Friday night there was still something left in the tank and he’s come through it great and is really full of himself this morning.”
The unorthodox approach for Secretively isn’t deterring punters from believing the son of Dawn Approach can be in the thick of things when the Precise Fire Benchmark 78 (1400m) gets underway late on Saturday afternoon.
After 9am race morning Secretively was a quick firmer, trimming up from $10 to $8 within minutes and his place in the market suggesting victory is well within the realms of possibility.
And there will be no concerns with leading jockey Tommy Berry familiarising himself with the galloper having steered him to his third placed finish at Canterbury less than 24 hours earlier.

@kid-chocolate currently sitting in the members at Rosehill sinking a few in prep to watch a mates horse run in the race before, will look out for it!

2nd place! But the 51-1 winner killed me. 20-cent quaddie paid almost six-grand.
