The SARATOGA race meet in upperstate New York starts today. Opening Day! It is America’s oldest & most prestigious race meet. The track is often called “The Graveyard Of Champions,” as Man O War suffered his only defeat here, and Secretariat lost a couple times. Which gives me upside and hope!
…
But-but-but (grasping at straws here…), note his strong turf workouts at Saratoga, including his last run bullet.
…UPDATE: Went off at 90-1. He was giving a thrill holding 2nd at the 3/4 pole, then died in the straight and walked home in last place. Was fun for a minute and a half.
LOMU is back, baby. Wearing saddlecloth # 12 this time, Race 6 at Saratoga. It’s Travers Day, which is Saratoga’s biggest day (and one of the biggest in American racing calendar, with six G1 races). Lomu will not be in a Grade 1, he’s stuck in a $103K allowance, and for good reason. His last five starts he’s gone off at 71-1, 99-1, 87-1, 90-1, and 41-1 and never finished better than 6th. His handlers don’t seem to know what to do with him — his last three starts keep getting shorter, cutting back from a mile-and-sixteenth to 5-1/2 furlongs. Morning line is 30-1, he’ll drift, surely. They’re certainly optimistic chasing that Saratoga fantasy, so… holding my nose $5 E/W.
Update: Late scratch. Saved myself $10. Which I might need. I played a $1 Pick 6 on those G1s and hit them, for all of $122.60 payout. Eating chalk tonight. The Belmost winner and hot fave Essential Quality won the Travers Stakes in a thrilling duel and now heads into the Breeders Cup as leading contender for America’s Horse of the Year.

So, Jamie Kah and three other jocks nailed in an AirBnB orgy (allegedly), one of them snitched by an ex (un-named) for Covid curfew violations, and she gets dinged three months suspension and will miss the Victoria Spring Carnival. Ouch!

not the only one, either. Verry Elegants Melbourne jock just got three months last night for admitting to being involved.

He’s the best.
High praise for McDonald
FORM analyst Daniel O’Sullivan tweeted last week that James McDonald was the best jockey since Darren Beadman and will go down as one of the top five jockeys of all.
Newgate Farm responded on social media saying, “there is no jockey on the planet riding as well”.
The question is: when will McDonald peak?
If he wants it, he’s got 15 years left in his prime. And after that, he’ll still be good enough to ride Group 1 winners.

Jayzuz, what happened at this party? Funny seeing the link on all the SMH and The Age posts under the clickable “AirBnB”. Are they trying to covid-shame Kah or slut-shame her? Was it an orgy? Who snitched?? Enquiring minds want to know…
…
Suspended jockey Mark Zahra allegedly lied to stewards asking whether he attended an illegal Mornington house party because his wife was “sitting right there” when the phone rang.
…
The submission prepared by Zahra’s counsel, Patrick Wheelahan, QC, reads: “The reason Zahra first denied his presence at the Airbnb when first called by (chief steward) Mr Cram was because when he took the call from Mr Cram, he was in the presence of his wife — ‘sitting right there’.
“Zahra called Mr Cram back later that same day after the races, when he had ‘cleared up his home front’.
“As explained by Zahra to Mr Cram, his personal life came before racing; he wanted to tell his wife what actually happened ‘before it hit the press’.
“After sorting out his personal life on the home front, Zahra took it upon himself to call Mr Cram and tell him he was in fact present at the Airbnb gathering.”
Zahra has pleaded guilty to misleading stewards.

Good luck to all those that have a horse running today, especially if said horse is running in Cairns....
I was just playing Kembla today, maybe Flemington, (Mo’unga in the Makybe Diva), who’s running in Cairns, I’ll watch…?

Don't let the bastards keep her down? This is entirely on her and her fellow party goers. Racing had done a brilliant job of upholding its social licence to keep racing through lockdown in Australia by applying stringent protocols and not giving the public a reason to cry foul about racing participants abusing their privilege.
Much like the league players who had a piss up at one guy's house, this type of indulgence while so many Aussies can't go more than 5km from their house for more than an hour or two a day and have had their income tested by this pandemic, risks breaching that social licence.
She's a brilliant talent, but she's not above the law. I'm glad she's taking the right attitude to returning after her suspension though.

Same crowd that would have turned in Anne Frank and demanded Rosa Parks sit at the back of the bus. “It’s the law.”

holy shit could you imagine if their little fucking shenanigans had resulted in Vic racing being shut down on the brink of the carnival?
When do you reckon it would have been safe for them to re-emerge in to Australian society? 2024? 2025?

Yeah, yeah. And Brian O’Driscoll Could. Have. Died. I’ve heard it all before.
