The delay by stewards may be whether to disqualify Master of Reality and argue where to place Il Paradiso, 2nd or 3rd. They might promote Prince of Arran to 2nd... Quite a chunk of money hanging on this decision...

Made the canny decision an hour out from the race to contact my former workmate who had tipped 3 of the 4 last Melbourne Cup winners. His tip? Vow and Declare. $5EW on that & some each way cash on Prince of Arran got me into the black for the race.
