Black Caps v Ireland
-
Amazing chase by Mike Brwcewell, topped off by 20 runs off the last over. He got us out of jail there.
-
A comfortable one wicket win with a ball to spare entirely thanks to Michael Bracewell.
-
Some random thoughts, admittedly based on a sample size of one game, the year so far, and falling asleep for two-thirds of the game.
Bowling:
With the squad we've got we really missed Adam Milne. Tickner seemed a step down when he came on at first change, and at that stage of the innings he didn't look like taking a wicket, so that was a little bit of a pressure release. Ish looked to be bowling a good line without much turn early on, but seems to have been hit a bit more later in the innings? We also missed Santner's potential to bowl a spell of ten overs for 35 - 45 runs. Great to have Lockie back.
Batting:
Good to see Guptil with a return to runs at the international level. Allen still has that nagging suspicion of being a guy with a very good eye who might hit 80 from 45, but might just as easily be "six and out" much of the time. Young also has a growing sense of a guy who will be around for three to four years until the next best option comes along. Will be very happy to be wrong.Nicholls continues to struggle against teams who won't gift him a life or two. I still shudder at Ian Smith making comparisons with Alan Border to a primarily Australian audience a few years back. We will need Latham's famed minnow bashing skills in full force for the rest of the series.
Sir Michael Bracewell.
(Knighthood citation: two losses of that magnitude in the weekend would have been unbearable).

Wow Bracewell. 1 man v an Irish clean sweep over New Zealand.

Such a massive contribution. I'm trying to think of similar one man stands for victory, and I'm reminded of Dan Vettori bowling, batting in the top four, and all but driving the team bus to save us from a possible Test loss in Bangladesh a decade or so ago.

Not an international, but a similar performance by the same bloke...

I saw a bit of that innings, half of New Plymouth seemed to be in danger of being hit by the ball. I'd forgotten just how close that one was to the wire too.

Yeah this seems to be the case so far. Even Latham/Nicholls type level might be a bit far for him. The jury is definitely still out on that one.

ODI II might be a delayed start tonight with wet weather in Malahide. Santner is available for this game, no word on the teams.
Could do worse than bring in Santner for Nicholls, and bat Bracewell at 5...
-
NZ: 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Finn Allen, 3 Will Young, 4 Tom Latham(capt&wk), 5 Henry Nicholls, 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 Michael Bracewell, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Matt Henry, 10 Blair Tickner, 11 Jacob Duffy
No Lockie... unless he's injured, we really are determined to give Ireland the best possible chance.

No wet weather here.
-
Bracewell had himself a game again. Tickner - yeah, nah.
-
Sir Michael Bracewell once again to the rescue.
Based on recent Black Caps selection strategies, we'll now probably rotate Bracewell with Sodhi for the final game....
The run of form for Young and Nicholls continues.
-
@Donsteppa Do you think Guptill and Young compared notes when back in the pavilion?

If it was me, I'd be looking at my bat like it had a hole in it
-
Well not exactly convincing but better than the ABs have managed. Imaging losing both the cricket and the rugby to the Irish..

Especially doing so with half the top Black Caps sitting back at home. At least Kane's elbow will be well rested for the IPL.
-
Game three underway. Black Caps win the toss and bat. One change - Lockie back in for Duffy, so for whatever reason Tickner gets all three games.
Two early boundaries for Guptil that have teased the field for a catch, but safely made it. 12/0 after three.
-
Black Caps off to a solid start - 58/0 after 7 overs. Guptill 33 off 23, Allen 23 off 21
-
Finn Allen spoons one in the air, out for 33. NZ 78/1 off 9.2 overs.
-
Will Young struggles to score and then runs himself out with a desperate attempted single to mid off that was never there. Another unconvincing knock this Northern summer, with 3 from 12.
-
Latham 30 (26), a good start, but doesn't kick on. He'll need to step up against the decent teams at this rate. 146/3 after 23.1 overs.
Can Henry Nicholls turn his wretched form around?
-
Nicholls bashes his way back into some form with 79 from 54.
-
360/6 in the end. At one stage it looked like 380 might have even been on the cards, but consistently high scoring the whole way through the innings. Michael Bracewell once again finishes the innings with a not out.
-
Just checked Cricinfo
Ireland 3 down, caps dropping sitters and 98 off 12 overs. Could be a brutal loss from here
-
Classic black craps.
Santner goes 6 1 1 W to start the next over.
Need to put pressure on the new man and pray
-
Fuck you Foster
-
Last ball, 2 to tie...
-
Ireland get a bye and fall 1 short.
Damn.
Sounded sloppy on Cricinfo
Edit: sloppy by the kiwis

Threw a dodgy feed on for the last 5 minutes and got to the stage where I assumed we'd lose. They had 5 off 3 remaining with 2 wickets and our field had just dropped a catch to go for 4. How do we score 360 and almost lose? To Ireland?
-
So a convincing three - nil series thrashing of Ireland by one wicket, three wickets, and by one run...

And save Latham's blushes again.

We are not far off minnow status.

Yeah the Black Caps ‘depth’ is a contradiction in terms when good players aren’t there

Our rest and rotation policy assumes a depth that isn't there. And apparently gives the IPL franchises priority...

If not priority to IPL it's priority to the players having to rest after IPL

Just look at what Foster has done to the BC's resolve. Yuck.
