Yes some pieces from the article below
“You never prepare for something like that,” said Penney of his sacking. “You’re always thinking about the next week. [Chief executive] Paul Doorn, who I have a lot of time for, and I had a few conversations. I knew he was feeling the pressure. There is a time when that pressure causes something to pop and I understand after the performance of the Reds match [a 46-14 defeat] that the board had a meeting in the morning [on Sunday] and made a decision to exit me.
“Getting a million dollars taken out of the budget at the back-end of COVID is probably going to cost this organisation more [in the long run],” Penney said. “We were dealing with recruitment with a million dollars less than everybody else.
Penney said he’d been made promises by Davis when he signed in late 2019 but felt those hadn’t been kept.“The chairman told me ‘money is no object here, Sydney is a big place, if you need some stuff and support, we’ll be able to get it’,” Penney said. “The other side of the coin was [I was told] there will be patience because of the age profile of the group.
“Well, 18 months later, we’ve seen that neither of those things have been forthcoming – patience or financial resources – to be able to put this group together properly.
“It’s clearly a situation where people have decided on the old adage; if the team doesn’t perform, sack the coach, without looking too far into a lot of the issues that are around.”
Penney recorded five wins from 19 matches in charge of the Waratahs, but largely inherited a roster built by former general manager of rugby Tim Rapp, who departed earlier this year.

@Chris What are your thoughts on the fact there were quite a few senior Tahs players who either left or wanted to leave because of Penney?
-
@kiwi_expat i know if you were asking me the quesiton id want to know what about penny they didn't like...was he and arsehole for no reason?....was he an obviously bad coach?....or did he have high expectations those players didn;t want to live up too?
-
I don’t really know why the tahs players wanted to leave.
Just from his time at Canterbury and under Deans at the Crusaders he was well liked by the players.
Robbie Deans and Dave Rennie both got moved on from Australian coaching roles maybe Kiwi coaches do not fit in that
enviroment,I am at a wait and see as far as Penney will go,
He has had success as Canterbury NPC coach 4 titles in 4 years and picked Razor as his assistant.
Won a SR with the Crusaders as assistant to Robbie Deans,
Some good history there.
Razor rates him. -
Wasn't Brad Thorn also an agreed leave? Any successful NZ coaches over the ditch?

Some good history there. He may be a fine coach & clearly he should've gotten the job back in 2009... however for 2024 going forward I think this is a very uninspiring choice - as he is approaching 60 now & has mostly been coaching in Japanese Div 2 for the last 10 years, so not very relevant experience, neither is he a guy for future who can take a progressive step forward for them.
I suspect this may be a short-term 'caretaker' appointment until Goodman becomes available.
-
That is exactly what it is a care taker role,
Until Goodman becomes available they rate Tamati Ellison very highly, they may promote him. -

Two years, yeah
Penney has accepted a two-year contract and will soon return to Christchurch to replace good friend Scott Robertson, the latter having been appointed All Blacks coach for four years from 2024.
