For sure. And they had their chances to avoid this predicament, they get what they deserve

funny little comp we have here aye
12 months ago the table ended up
Blues
Crusaders
Chiefs
Brumbies
Canes
Waratahs
Red
HighlandersFirst and third swap, the Drua jump in over the 'landers. Otherwise it's a very familiar story.

@mariner4life Another way of looking at it is
Last year the gap between 7th and 11th was 23 competition points.
This year the difference between 7th and 11th was 5 competion points.

Last year the gap bewteen 1 and 7 was 23 points. This year, 33 points.
There's a massive gap developing in the comp, it's not healthy, but it ain't going away soon

@KiwiMurph This may be proven totally incorrect, but I'm picking it to be even tighter across the board next year. I do worry about Moana and potentially the Drua, but all of the Australian teams are likely to take a step forward/NZ sides a step back, simply because the carrot of the Lions Tour/Eddie Jones has meant strong player retention.
Western Force to crack the Top 6, and I think it could well be that they along with another Aussie side (The Tahs?) crack the Top 4. Should be good fun for all.

I'm Picking that these could be the rivalry games for next year... I can easily see these being tightly contested barring MP, which should hopefully aid the close competition.

SRP currently has 12 teams same as English Premiership in which teams play each other twice (home and away) & I see no reason as to why we shouldn't do the same.
When they become a 10 team league next season the English Premiership will still have 18 regular season, 4 more than SRP does.
The Top14 remains the outlier with 26 matches - and it doesn't seem to be doing them much harm.
-
@kiwi_expat i hear the answer that these teams have much bigger squads, does anyone know but big the pro14 squads are?
-
@Chris with our short term injury covers...the highlanders have had 50 by my count this year...so we're not talking an exponentially bigger squad
we might be kidding our selves the current squad size is right and we need a complete rethink
-
@Kiwiwomble not sure, I know our CEO's were pushing for more regular season games, think Andrew Hore wanted a 9 month season.

That would require:
- bigger squads
and more importantly:
- the competition to start even earlier in Summer, because there's no way the tail end of the SRP competition will be played at the same time as the July test matches (assuming these will continue, even with an overhaul of the international test calendar) and the competition having a break for test matches and then play the final stages of SRP is very unlikely, too.
So I see plenty of reason why we shouldn't do the same.
I actually find SRP more than long enough. I'm reaching that stage that I'm really looking forward to the NPC and can't wait for SRP to end.

@Kiwiwomble Squads absolutely need to be bigger... teams shouldn't need to be calling players in as injury cover. As well as having contracted U20 players, I think this should be the rough guide of a 48 man squad:
Loosehead Props (4x)
Tighthead Props (4x)
Hookers (4x)
Locks (6x)
Loose Forwards (9x)
Halfbacks (4x)
First Fives (4x)
Midfielders (6x)
Outside Backs (7x)If they go down this route, the answer is to play more games, and the NPC becomes a feeder competition, that is closer to the Heartland Championship. The current model where there are give or take 450 pro/kind of pro NPC players model is simply too many, and I'm sure in part contributes to the player drain.
