Robertson would be the ideal coach for this team to make it separate from the AB coaching group.

Haven’t they missed a trick not calling this team the Shadow All Blacks?

@Bovidae Yep, and also a great way to get him close enough to the ABs coaching set-up to be able to sufficiently meet the continuity requirement they like so much when appointing an All Blacks coach. Just in case that plays a role again after the 2023 RWC.

it's such a no-brainer decision that i can almost guarantee they will do the exact opposite

For those too lazy to read that article.

NZR is also in negotiations to add two additional fixtures to the tour, against a national team from a developing rugby nation and a second XV team from a Tier 1 rugby nation with details to be announced in due course.

Georgia would be a great opponent for the developing nation.

    sounds like a cool tour

hope they don't take an enormous AB squad so they have access to some good players.

It's better than 'Junior All Blacks' & 'All Blacks XV'

Still keeps the term 'All Blacks' in there which is important for marketing reasons

Will be fascinating to see who they do pick and see people on the Ferns opinions on who they should select in the squad.

So in theory we will have what 60 players touring at the end of the year between the two squads? That is 4 starting Super Rugby teams 😉

But a good way to continue development and build skills etc.

@Chris They're likely to be in Europe at almost the same time, so there may be cross-overs (not saying that I agree with that).

My most pressing question is the relationship between the teams. Are they really separate? How much input will the ABs coaching staff have on squad and match day selections? And how much on game plan etc? If the influence of the ABs coaches is significant, you can forget about Razor coaching this team. He'll want to be - and should be - the only captain steering this ship.

Of course the AB selectors should be picking this team too.

I would hope that whoever coaches side recognises it's about improving depth at a national level and working alongside the All Blacks team. Any other reaction from a potential coach would be petty, short sighted and IMO disqualifying from the top job

If Robertson is tapped I'm sure he would do fine and be a team player

The relationship would be similar to McMillan and the AB coaches. The Māori get to play their own way, but there will be some co-ordination on selection because the ABs get first choice of players.

@Bovidae Yep, I think that would be fine. I'm not entirely sure how the MABs are picked, but I don't think it's the ABs coaches who pick the players. Obviously, there's some coordination and discussion, but apart from that McMillan and co will pick the team and decide how they play.

I am not sure If Razor's knee replacement surgery would take him out of contention to coach this side.About 3 months recovery time, so it might not have any impact on him coaching.

Yep, what I said and meant doesn't contradict that. There needs to be coordination, cooperation and discussion between the two coaching groups. But that doesn't mean that the ABs coaches should take the decisions for this team as regards the selection of the (entire) team or how the team plays (game plan).

Of course the AB selectors should be picking this team too.

I disagree with that. Obviously, the two head coaches would discuss selections, coordinate fringe ABs getting game time for the ABs XV, but otherwise the coach of this team should be able to pick the players himself. The ABs coaches could decide what important skills they'd want to develop in players and - in a general way - what kind of game strategies they'd want to develop (for example, to counter a rush defence), but it should be up to the coach of this team of how this should be implemented for this team and how that translates into a game plan. On a meta level, sure, the ABs coaches decide what they want, but at a team level, they should leave it to the coach of this team.

If Robertson is tapped I'm sure he would do fine and be a team player

Again, what I said and meant doesn't contradict this.
