@KiwiMurph ..I personally don’t think it’s a simple as that ,lomax suddenly doesn’t become a bad scrummager ..he’s been their mainstay on the right hand side for the last couple of seasons
I swear it’s Blackwell. Every time he comes back in we go backwards.
Yep but funnily enough he was still there when Franks came on. I couldn't work out what problem is, Lomax seemed to just not be there for some reason, and he's usually not bad at all.
I haven't seen Lomax get done like that before.
Does remind me a bit of when a young Wyatt Crockett got worked over against Italy. Sir Ted came out hard afterwards and said the ref failed to protect Crockett from underhand Italian cheating, so there might have been something along those lines going on. Particularly, because Bell was getting repeatedly pinged in the scrum vs the Crusaders.

Okay, listening online to the radio works. Slight delay still (radio is behind, but that's better than 20 seconds ahead).
For who's interesting in listening to different commentators:
https://www.iheart.com/live/newstalk-zb-sport-6194/Do it the old fashioned way, hunt out your old transistor and you get it almost in real time (the commentators are calling the game off TV so that's about as real time as you can get after allowing for TV being a few seconds behind anyway)
-
Re the early no try: I thought deliberately returning the ball to a scrum was a free kick? Or is that one of those obsolete laws? (Haven't read the thread and as yet don't know the score ... 16min in it's 3-0)

Oh that is tough on the Tahs but tech correct.
Actually he went easy on them. That should have been a FK to Canes not a scrum.
Thought so

I actually did. The old fashioned radio gave commentary that was at least 20 seconds ahead of Sky Go. May work with tv, but not with watching online.

@Darren Fidow’s a quality ball carrier, I reckon he should move out of the front row tbh. He could be a beast at 6 because he still has pace for a big man.
Fidow had played as a hooker in one game for the NZ U20s in a world cup and did pretty well there.

I was wondering the other week if it would be worth Fidow considering a move to hooker. Didn't realise he had some experience there.

Can Franks play well on both sides of the scrum ?
Yep, Franks can play both sides, only trouble is Owen Franks plays one side and Ben Franks the other!!
Ben actually did play LH and TH, but later in his career, when they went to 3 front row replacements he focused on one side.
You have to persist with Lomax, there is a foundation there.

Couldn't believe how bad our front row was in the first half, we tended to let their front row get under ours, giving them a ton of scrum penalties allowing the Waratahs to completely dominate us in possession/territory... when Franks & Coles came on they added that much needed steel to the front row which gave us a good platform & a lot more possession to get back into the match, also our composure played a big part too in winning it.
I think it was purely Angus Bell just giving Lomax the work over. He’s arguably the best up and coming loose-head in world rugby, but you’d expect Lomax to do better. It’s strange though because Lomax has been solid for most of the year but I guess he just couldn’t handle him on the night.
What we do from here is the big question because you don’t want Lomax to lose all his confidence. I reckon the best thing to do is chuck him back in against the Rebels next week and let him make up for it.
Yeah, was very surprised Lomax was so poor at scrum time, maybe it was an one-off shocker ? ...good point you don't want him losing his confidence, so might be a good idea that him & Franks start in the front row in the next one.
Was it actually just Lomax, or was it the fact that Numia was getting sheared off on other side and taking Aumua with him, leaving Lomax alone?
Yeah, Numia wasn't too flash either... to be fair that whole front row didn't go well as an unit.

He has always been a tighthead I can not remember him playing LH in all his days at club rugby in CHCH through to the End of his Crusaders time.
Thanks... a prop that can play both sides well is a really good asset to a team.
-
@NZbloke Rakete-Stones can play both sides. Just focusing on LH now, but he has also played TH until a few years ago.
-
@Stargazer have you heard much about Gus Brown from Napier Boys? A mate that still follows school rugby said he's the best prop in the country and will definitely play pro rugby in the future.
Having not followed too much School rugby for a couple years, is he true on those assumptions? I hope so, because the Canes really need to develop some quality props.
-
@Canes4life He's a great talent. Big (tall) TH prop, in his third year playing for Napier Boys' 1st XV. He played at lock and sometimes as a loose forward in his first year in the team.
I always find predictions about pro rugby a bit premature at this age, because 1st XV players do not always develop as expected (not sure what happened to Patrick Teddy), but he looks a really good prospect.
Here's an article from 2020 with some info about him.
-
@Stargazer fair call, he looks like a big lad and I'm sure he's probably developed even further in the last two years.
Hopefully he gets the right coaching and mentoring to steer him right going forward.
